I refuse to pay Chorus $2,600 to connect 1/2m between my copper wire and theirs, so my only option (until RBI2 fibre in 2020 for me) is a 'fixed wireless' link. If you can offer it to mobile customers, why not to fixed wireless ones too?

Whilst our Skinny Direct Freedom Combo has non-stop data, it also has some restrictions including throttling the speed at 22GB. This approach wouldn't be suitable for a fixed wireless customer.

Although the current fixed wireless plan is 100GB, it is possible to re-purchase during the month if that is insufficient.

It is a fast moving market and we are always looking at what improvements we can make. When we launched Skinny in 2012 our Love Bytes Data Combo included 120MB whilst our Loose Lips Talking Combo offered a whopping 10MB!

At this point in time, we don't support anything that isn't the Skinny-supplied modem, so no, sorry.

Depends what you mean by 'support':

Will it work?
Almost certainly. And If you got it from spark or bigpipe then it will work with no configuration changes

Can u get help from skinny if you have a problem with it? Nope.

Depends what you mean by 'support':

That's correct, but also important to note that we don't currently allow sign up to Skinny Unlimited without a modem purchase. There's no BYO option. As @NonprayingMantis says, you could of course sign up with us, getting a modem in the process, and then plug in your own gear and have it work, but then there's no support if something goes awry with it.

The bottom line is it's a lot easier to support customers if they're all on the same gear.

Well for me its not worth signing up, Bigpipe is only $10 more per month and if I switched I would have to pay $99 for this router from Skinny...plus I really like my Dlink router and it would have way more features than the Skinny one.

Often what happens though is someone will sign up to this sort of plan as they aren't aware of the pros and cons, then the real IT person of the family gets pulled in to sort something out and finds there is a lack of choice (in modems at least) and in this case probably made worse by a 24month lock in.

The HG659 is actually a pretty good device and gets recommended a lot here. It does everything most people need but if you want better Wi-Fi perhaps plug in an additional AP

Agreed, it can be a great modem.

I am personally aware that some firmwares are not so flash on this modem compared to others but hey.. software issues can always be there with the best of devices!

while the HG659b may not be ideal for the most techy of customers, i feel like those customers would also prefer to go with an isp which caters to network rather than a hands on low cost support model.

It's only 30Mbps, compared to 100Mbps on Skinny.

VLAN untagged, PPPoE, same as Bigpipe.

If someone is genuinely "techy" then they will have their own decent router and just use the ISP-supplied modem as modem-only, passing the internet through the ethernet to your "good" router, disabling wifi on the ISP-supplied modem and letting the "good" router do the WiFi, ethernet, etc to all other devices.

This is what I always do with these ISP-supplied routers with a 5m WiFi range.

It's just discouraging that every ISP has their own proprietary modem that you have to buy and can't even supply your own of the same identical model (doesn't really make sense to me at all but whatever).
