I pay $85 for flat rate VDSL. A quick Google shows I could pay as little as $70.

What would I lose? IPV6, a local call centre which answers calls within a few rings and doesn't try and feed me BS.

Not everyone wants the lowest price. Quite frankly, if I ran an ISP (offering connections) I would be demarketing to that demographic.

It may not help you but for comparison (sorry about your rates):

Standard VDSL 100/40 Mb/s, no data cap, no throttling, native IPv6 (PPPoE), incl. EU phone flat, equals to 42 NZ$/month incl. GST for a 2yrs plan.

For a router add a monthly renting fee depending of equipment or just use your own for no additional charge.

My wife comes from the Philippines. If you look at their telco propaganda you'd think their internet is decent and at a price comparable to ours. But the reality is far from that with the truth being they just copied and pasted from 1st world telcos to try and fool the population with some perverse parody.

So chances are the EU internet is probably OK and yes it is cheaper, but in the world scheme of things ours is pretty decent and at a fair price. On top of that our ISP's generally deliver what they say and there is accessible and effective legal recourse if not.

It's not like I could even live in a equally-rural area in Australia and get what I have here (rural area) performance/reliability/price wise.

So I am grateful for what we have.

You didn't get the message. 1Gb/s (expensive) fibre for urban areas for a few people doesn't compensate (now up to) 250Mb/s via existing copper (plus hybrid technology via 4G for remotes) infrastructure for many people. The return of the investment for spreading the fibre network can't be established via a 129 NZ$/month rate of the 1G/s customers alone. So somebody else has to pay for. ;-)

We have regulation authorities for that and the result of the ISP's efforts can be seen *here*.
