This SIM card/Phone number has $29.95 credit on it.
The phone numbers sold as part of this promotion have been automatically signed up for the 500MByte plan rather than the $1 per day plan.
On this 500 MB plan you'll be charged 10c per MB for the first 300 MB and the next 200 MB are free.

If you happen to go over your data allowance, then you'll automatically get a further 500 MB of data to use in that same calendar month for just $29.95. Same rules apply where you are charged 10c per MB for the first 300 MB and the next 200 MB are free. And after that's used up, then each megabyte will cost 10c until the end of the calendar month.

The SIM card (phone number) will have $29.95 credit on it until you use the SIM card. It does not disappear after one month. Remember a you need to topup at least once every 6 months.

Thanks Telecom. Love free stuff, especially with no contracts to sign. And an hour after purchasing it I got an email from Telecom welcoming me to mobile broadband and with support info etc if I need it (which I don't, but thanks anyway!).

Only thing I didn't like was the rep at the Orb store didn't ask me for ID or ask me anything other than my Telecom email address.

Other than that, well pleased.

Same here, all they asked me for at Leading Edge, was just for my bill, thats it.

^ I assume you had to show your telecom bill and that they verified it using the online portal like they did with all the others. The email address was not id the account # on the bill was.

As stated by NealR:

NealR: You need to bring in some form of identification with a copy of your Broadband account. This enables us to give the free TStcik to the right person as there is only one free TSTick per Broadband account.

Holding a bill in your hand does not in any way prove your identity or authorization to transact on or use said bill.

True. I did think of that after I posted.

No, you may be wrong, I just tried a Vodafone NZ sim in MY device, and I can assure you it didn't work, for whatever reason. Like I said, I quote from the rep: "Due to the nature of the promotion, the device provided may be locked."

To say that it is locked just because it didnt work for you is extremly narrow minded.

I apologize for saying that people were wrong, although I did say "didn't work, for whatever reason."
I did attempt to try using the APN's I found in a different thread, which is the same as the one's mentioned here, however as I said "didn't work, for whatever reason." and how is it narrow-minded if i'm going by what the person at the dedicated support centre for the T-stick said (even though they are usually wrong...)

Really, probably just a dead sim card :(

Nice work on editing your original post, and then the subsequent quoting of your original post - it helps if they match Tongue out

While you did say "for whatever reason", you also said he was wrong - editing your original post and then using an excuse isn't smart. People can see Smile

Anyway, I can assure you, along with many many other people here, that Telecom do not lock their devices.

Now, back on topic!

What about the Samsung W531. When these were sold they were sold  SIM locked. So don't say Telecom do not lock devices.

Don't forget to register the data stick phone number and score another $10.00 credit.

I've been talking to a local dealer (Orb). They don't seem to know much about this stuff, let alone be able to explain it to someone else. I bought a stick from them yesterday, then after a bit more reading I realised the deal might not be what I thought it was. On questioning, they told me the prepaid balance expired end of Dec. I said this didn't seem to be what Telecom's website implied (why can't they just state this stuff clearly up front?). So they put the SIM card from the T-Stick into a phone, dialed *333 (I think) and said "see, it says the balance expires 31 Dec". Not being a phone geek, I believed them and returned the stick for a refund, as i didn't want to use it until February, and even then it wasn't that important to me, I'll just use wifi if I have to. But it would be nice to have mobile data, if only i could get the facts straight. Now it seems like they were wrong, and the balance will still be there in Feb if I do'nt use the card before then, so maybe I'll get one after all.

They also seemed unsure what options I had for different plans with this card, and quoted my a lot of prepaid options, which when i asked to see written down somewhere, they couldn't do. They told ne the $1/day prepaid wasn't an option and kept on about needing a "primary base" or something.

Where oh where do you go to get the correct imformation on this stuff? I'm not doubting what NealR is saying, but should I really have to resort to an Internet forum to get info on a Telco's pricing?

Any further explanation/confirmation/enlightenment gratefully received.

Sorry ajw, but it was a mistake on my behalf, see here, they are in fact correct, these devices are not sim locked.

I am reasonably sure that I have understood the issues of how the 500MB monthly allowance works and the pre paid dollars but wanted to be able to monitor both the MBs and the dollars. I tried to add the T stick number to the Your Telecom broad band meter but could not and I was sent an email from Telecom that states:

To check your usage for your Prepaid T-Stick please call our Prepaid Helpdesk on 0800 32 32 32 any day between 7am and 9pm or email prepaid_admin@telecom.co.nz

We have recently been advised that a new online meter will be launched in June 2010. When this becomes active you will be able to check your usage online through the Mobile Broadband section of our website at the link below.
www.telecom.co.nz/mobilebroadband

But on calling 0800 323232 you are told that you must call from your mobile - - please hang up and call from your mobile phone. So back to Telecom and then I get this reply:

I am sorry, I should have explained better.
When you call 0800 32 32 32 you will need to select the option 5 to speak to a representative. Our Customer Services Team will then be able to check your usage for you.

Have since taken the SIM from my T Stick put it into my iPhone and have got my dollars balance that way and also claimed the $10 for registering the number.

Taking the SIM in and out of the T stick seems a difficult way to access this information until Telecom has the website access up and running in June 2010.

Has anybody found any other way of getting this information?

That wasn't telecom locking it, that was Samsung, they did it for the other providers they sold it to as well.  Mainly due to the fact it was a dual CMDA/GSM Sim.  And the companies they sold it to were primarily GSM.  Easy 5 digit code to get around it though :)

Typing this from my Tcom stick, woohoo

Oh and Thanks Andrew, just registered my SIM online :) woohoo another $10

Thanks - have been able to set up password and access data use.

Another issue that I have not been sure of relates to the Telecom Connection Manager that has a Username and Password - these are blank and the connection works without them by just clicking connect. Is there is reason to set these up?

Secondly i am using the T stick in my Macbook Pro and the message comes up "New Network Interfaces have been detected. Following not setup .. To set these up etc .."

Is there any need to do this? Currently I just cancel this dialog box and everything works but would like this window not to open every time.
