Ahh mate read the beginning of the thread (I was the OP), couldnt call and couldnt txt off 2 phones (I know several others who had problems today in Auckland in the early afternoon), It was fixed by reinserting sims on both handsets.

The thing which gets me about the outages on XT is the length of them. This was if we say from 3:30 to 10:30 was 7 hours, the other ones were the same streaching to 3 days.

I can understand something failing and being replaced or rebooted but this feels like no one has their finger on exactly what the problem is, where it is and what to do to resolve it.

Look at the CDMA outage a week or two ago, it affected 30 odd cell sites and was a faulty piece of kit and was found and replaced and live again within a few hours.

Just my uninformed 2c

Its one thing to be a supplier and another to manage the network. From what I understand Gen-i are in the middle of this so based on Telecom not blaming Alcatel last time I suspect they are pointing at Alcatel with 1 finger while three fingers are pointing back at themselves.

Who are the other major 3G equipment supliers in the world, any of them having massive issues elsewhere? I wonder if Telecom have again gone with the wrong option.

Which turned out not to be not quite correct as Telecom issued a statement at 12.05 saying it was continuing to work on the issue, from TVNZ:

Service has been restored to most Telecom XT cell sites affected by another major outage yesterday, and work will continue throughout the night to get the remainder back up and running, the company says.

Customers on the XT network south of Taupo had difficulty making and receiving calls, sending and receiving text messages and using broadband on their mobiles from yesterday afternoon.

Telecom initially denied there was a problem before updating its website with notification of the system disruption at 5.50pm.

At 12.05am, the company said it was continuing work to restore service to the remaining affected cell sites.

Sorry, I didn't mean to say the entire network was up and running, only my cell site - just reporting where the fault was gone from.

XT UPDATE: 6.15AM ? ALL SITES RESTORED

Telecom advises that services have been restored to all cell sites that were affected by yesterday?s outage on the XT network from Taupo southwards.

The network remains under close observation.

Telecom also announced that chief executive officer, Paul Reynolds, will host a briefing on XT in Auckland on Tuesday afternoon, 23 February.

Full details on timing and location will be confirmed later this morning.

Perhaps they jumped the gun again on saying everythings sweet because the XT status page here http://www.telecom.co.nz/help/content/0,10709,205875-204491,00.html?link=rdt was updated at 7am and says...

Issue: XT Outage - South of Taupo 23rd Feb
Date: 23 February 2010

We are currently experiencing some issues with our XT Mobile network which may mean some customers south of Taupo (including South Island) are having problems using Mobile services. This may include making/receiving calls, sending/receiving text messages and using Mobile Broadband services. We apologise for the inconvenience this is causing. We are working hard to resolve the issue and will continue to update this message as we learn more. This message was updated on Tuesday 23rd February at 07:00am.

So thats 20.5 hours for this outage and counting. Nothing like having a network which crashes once a month for a day or two. The Paul press conference should be interesting!

maknz: XT's superior pricing is what's making me stay. Unlimited texting and 120MB of data (100MB simply isn't enough, sorry VFNZ) cannot be found elsewhere. 2degrees is a joke for smartphones.

It sadens me that 120MB of data would ever be considered a great offerring. :(

Unless I'm confused by your post you are confused about pricing!

Vodafone charge $10 for 100MB and 10c per MB after this. Telecom charge $12 for 120MB and then 50c per MB after this. 120MB costs the same on both networks but if you go over the 120MB data is significantly cheaper on Vodafone.

Didn't consider the overage costs. I am saying that 120MB is enough, 100MB isn't, which are the data plans for each provider.

@zonky: yeah, data in NZ is terrible. 120MB just sufficies for push mail/light browsing/IRC/twitter.
