ElBroka:

I guess that means it is normal and nothing to be worried about.

Thanks.

It is normal. From Spark's website about the Smart Modem: Spark Smart Modem - How to check your modem lights | Spark NZ

"The Wi-Fi/WPS LED should be blue and flashing. This indicates that your devices have connected to your WiFi network and data is being transmitted."

Solid blue and flashing red is when WPS is in progress. What you're seeing is just anything you're uploading or downloading via wifi.

hio77:

This seems like quite a bug actually.

the wireless setup should replicate what is configured on the modem. hopefully @Talkiet can pass this along to the relevant folk in FOC to pass it up to the vendor (Likely Sean.)

00:21:13 Maricel : According to my support team. Smart mesh can only broadcast one network due to it's internal limitation. Our apologies for that.

The implications of this, if true, is pretty poor. Guest Network for the entire customer base using these products will degrade as the person moves away from the modem location into other parts of the house.

I can't believe this can be the answer. Surely not.

Unfortunately, this was the answer, now confirmed through another Spark employee.

For anyone googling this in the future, the answer is:

Spark Smart Mesh units are unable to broadcast a Guest Network at all due to internal limitations.

We're now on the prowl to replace the whole lot, modem included. Not much use to us now. House guests will be here in 2 weeks, they'll be needing WiFi :)

Cheers for the help, all.

Anyone else finding the router version v6.00.16 build01 really really buggy?

I’ve noticed this afternoon my router has been resetting itself every 20 minutes or so. Over the last week it has reset itself almost daily on this build?

Previously it has been rock solid, so was surprised to see it become really unstable.

Myself, I've found the opposite. It's not perfect (as I still get screamed at by the freeloaders in my house* when internet drops out), but better than the last version.

But I may be the only one in NZ still on ADSL, so that could be the difference!

I noticed on Spark Smart modem you cant have separate 2.4 and 5Ghz networks(except for guest), anyone know why?

You can. You need to turn bandsteering off.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

I have a smart modem in one room connected to an ONT but the wifi even about <10m out of the room is quite poor. In this case would a powerline adapter be better for extending range, over a smart mesh?

Im also seeing hidden networks on the same channel as my wifi, is that the same issue someone had with guest wifi not actually turning off?

Wifi in general seems poor. Right next to it with a laptop I get up to 40/40 Mbps on 2.4Ghz and 460/200 on 5Ghz

Is there any way of capping Guest download and upload bandwidth on the Spark Smartmodem? I can’t see it in the config software but perhaps I’m missing it? I’m able to do this on other networks running ER-X and Unifi Controller.

‘Thanks & regards

There are lots of factors that could reduce WiFi performance: Building materials, location and orientation of the WiFi router, wires and cables in walls, possibly laptop age and WiFi standards, other devices using the 2.4GHz spectrum.

Can you locate your Smart Modem in the room where you will use WiFi and connect to your ONT by either network cable or a good powerline network adapter?

The hidden networks you are seeing are possibly due to the Smart Modem looking or polling for Mesh units.

I am currently using a Skinny Smart Modem in a house with timber frames and gib walls. At 15m through 2 walls using my smart phone I get speeds: 2.4GHz 53/49Mbps and at 5GHz 291/181Mbps. From memory my spare Spark Smart modem showed similar WiFi performance.

My first ever AM radio network connection was with a 1MHz AM crystal(OA91) radio receiver.

No you'll see a hidden network with just the Smart Modem (I don't have a mesh unit). From memory enabling guest mode will change the name from "hidden" in the list of available networks to whatever the default name for the guest SSID is (or has been changed to) on your Smart Modem.

Can I ask if the DHCP reservation / Connected Devices listing issue been resolved?

As noted at page 38 of this thread (and elsewhere), when I enter DHCP reservation details and then check connected devices, under host name it reports “name unavailable” against manually entered reserved IPS. But when I check with LanScan all static devices have their reserved IP address and each reserved address can be successfully pinged. So the network appears to be working properly but the admin page isn’t reporting the connected devices correctly.

Apologies if I’ve missed an update on page 38 discussions, but if anyone has got this working properly I’d be interested.

Thanks & regards,

Can someone please advise what is the current firmware for the Smart Modem Router?  I have the router and a couple of smart mesh devices running on VDSL. Currently experiencing connectivity drop out issues (wired / wireless).

The summary page has v6.00.16 build01  but I am not sure if this is the latest. How do I force an update?

Thanks in advance!

I'm having the same issue, Spark already sent me a replacement modem as I complained about the old one rebooting itself. Modem has literally rebooted itself over 5 times over the past 2 hours.

I will get in touch with them to see if they can send me old firmware files so I can roll back the firmware on the modem and see if it helps.
