riahon: Interesting observation today.

Outlook 2007 on laptop (Vista). Port settings changed to 995 & 587 with smtp.xtra.co.nz. Today pop up asking username password error. Went in and changed to send.xtra.co.nz and worked fine. I never changed the port settings manually.

Outlook 2007 on PC (XP) - Port settings default 110 & 25 and smtp.xtra.co.nz. No problem sending and receiving emails.

How is it that for same email address I can send receive emails from 2 different computers with 2 different settings?

Might be a DNS issue. I just discovered two different machines resolving pop3.xtra.co.nz differently:

- one to 210.54.141.8 which has unsucessful mail downloads and cannot connect
- the other to 124.108.96.66, which identifies itself as pop1.tnz.mail.vip.aue.yahoo.com and from which downloads are successful

Outlook 2003 settings from xtra (there is no up-to-date entry for Outlook 2007):

http://xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4150-4453061,00.html

...

9.    Under "Incoming Server (POP3)", check the box next to "This server requires [my emphasis] an encrypted connection (SSL)". ... 10. Under "Outgoing Server (SMTP)", check the box next to "This server requires [my emphasis] an encrypted connection (SSL).

...
Troubleshooting instructions ...

...
6.    Click the "Advanced" tab and ensure that you have not [my emphasis] selected "This server requires a secure connection (SSL)" under the incoming (POP3) or outgoing (SMTP) port settings. ...

Which advice are users supposed to follow from this?

The Xtra website states it clearly IMHO, you should try the instructions listed, failing that try the Troubleshooting instructions. If you are still having throuble try dropping the whole SSL thing and revert send.xtra.co.nz to smtp.xtra.co.nz, which is working normaly for me where as send.xtra.co.nz will not work at all.

How confusing is this?  My mail is coming in a really weird order (based on test emails I sent myself with the time in the subject).  I'm also guessing that the server is working overtime as my mail delivery is painfully slow, or just timesout.

Keep checking the spam folder guys and girls; it seems to be targeting anything with images (e.g. Flybuys).

I had to turn the spam-filtering off in the end.  All of my wife's emails were ending up in the Spam folder in Webmail instead of coming down the pipe.  A great feature if you only use webmail but turn it off if you use a client.

You can choose to have even filtered Spam delivered marked as "Bulk". Marking them as "Not Spam" in webmail should train the Spam filter.

From http://xtra.co.nz/help?link=rdt @ 521PM Wednesday

There are outages scheduled for Webmail and My Account over the weekend. More info

Click on More Info - Says the problems are fixed.

So - Is the registration/webmail system still so badly broken that Telecom need to take it offline again this weekend, or are Telecom so inept that they still have not taken this message down relating to last weekend?

If they need a copy of frontpage to update the page, just give me a call guys :-)

And for a bonus question, if Telecom were not a telecommunications company, do you think they would do a better job communicating with customers?

It's all fixed according to a Telecom press release...

telecom-media.co.nz: Telecom has resolved a fault with the Yahoo!Xtra Bubble registration process that had affected some customers’ ability to access the service.

The technical fault identified on Monday night had meant some customers were unable to register for Yahoo!Xtra Bubble or access their webmail via the new service.

The resolution means that customers are now able to register for Bubble services including webmail - and large numbers of customers have been doing this successfully throughout today.

Chief Operating Officer, Consumer Kevin Kenrick says while the registration fault has been solved Telecom continues to assist remaining customers who have related issues with individual email settings.

Telecom has updated information online to assist customers who don’t yet have full service through Yahoo!Xtra Bubble - these customers should visit www.xtra.co.nz/help

Due to ongoing high demand Telecom has also brought on additional people at call centres to assist any customers who are still not yet registered or are having any email issues.

“We apologise for any inconvenience these problems have caused to affected customers and thank those who have been waiting to register for their patience,” Mr Kenrick says.

Well I don't know heaps about stuff like you guys but I hate it.... and my new bug is the fact that it now costs to access my inbox from my mobile phone. I loved that I could be anywhere and check my messages and decide if I wanted to pay to read them or delete stuff... Now I have to pay as soon as I even look....
I miss my old xtramail - life was simpler in the olden days :-(

Fixed father-in-law's setup tonight (he gave up after an hour on hold to the helpdesk).  He ended up with pop3.xtra.co.nz on port 110 and send.xtra.co.nz on port 587 (no SSL on either).

This is getting silly - webmail is loverly, really it is.  Problem is I use Gmail for webmail (sorry Mauricio), and don't really need another one.  I just want my Xtra mail downloaded to my home Outlook; should be simple.  I set everything up last night, and got downloading working (a little slow, but working none-the-less).

Tonight, no downloads; I'm pretty sure its due to timeouts server side.  Rod Drury made an interesting comment about international data traffic now the servers are hosted in Australia.  I'm guessing Telecom won't ping us for that as well, but it can't be helping the bandwidth across the Tasman surely??

Oh, and lugh, I can totally relate to the whole father-in-law thing.  I'm just waiting for the calls to come flooding in from friends and family when they haven't received their email for the 5th day running...

Check your Bulk folder in webmail to see what Yahoo regard as spam before looking elsewhere.

The curse for Xtra is that my father-in-law is probably quite representative of the average user.  He wasn't really sure what was going on, hadn't read the details of the change properly, didn't know how to fix his email issues, and got frustrated very quickly.  Methinks the bods at Xtra should have taken the lowest common denominator into account when undertaking this whole thing.  Mind you, that's what you get for letting marketing people (i.e. crayon eaters) run the show, as previously mentioned in this thread.

Oddly though, the whole migration didn't fix his historical problem of not receiving non-spam emails from certain users (e.g. family) - somehow, I thought it might.  God knows, no-one at Xtra has ever been able to help
