No... XT Network is not about "high speed broadband".

This "high speed broadband" is just one of the services enabled by the technology. There are others and most importantly it's about preserving Telecom's investment in future, and your investment in handsets.

If you go with "high speed broadband" then you are doing it wrong.

harrylin: Of course I know that. But if you have never used mobile broadband much, you won't know why We smartphone users use it. I have so many other things to do. Computer is not my best mate. If you don't use 3g broadband, there is no reason for you to buy a high end smartphone. This XT network is all about super high speed broadband. If you don't use 3g Internet, do you care about XT??

I have a 3G smartphone (which also doubles as a modem whne tethered to my laptop.)

I use it primarily for surfing, email, work documents (spreadsheets, powerpoint etc).

I have never used more than 2GB in a month, and mostly use far less than my 1GB plan allowance  (both voda and telecom bothe give you the extra GB for around $10-11, so I'm not bothered when I do occaisionally go over the 1GB).

for large downloads (music, games, video, etc), I use my home broadband - 40GB plan, faster speeds, more reliable connection.  I dont need to be at my computer to it, just set the download over night or whilst I am at work.

when I upgrade to an XT 7.2Mb/s conection I will be very unlikely to use very much more data on it than I currently do (I won't suddenly start sending/recieving bigger files, they will just arrive and send much faster - which is great).

Mobile BB is not designed to be transferring large files - use home BB for that.

If you think that you cannot get by on even 3GB a month on your smartphone then you are either using it wrong (i.e. you should be using your home BB), or one of the very few people who require large files transferred, but constantly work away from any sort of fixed network connection.

freitasm: What about shared plans with up to ten people? What about free calling between those ten people?

Good for a small business or a family with teenage-ish kids (until one of the kids blows the families bundle on day 2 of the month, meaning everyones usage for the rest of the month is billed), not so handy for Joe Average who only has their own personal usage to look after. Good if you have a closely related group of people to get in on it, but there are a lot of people who this won't suit. On first thought it sounds like something you could get a group of mates in on but on deeper thought it wouldn't work that nicely.

freitasm: What about no more on-net and off-net calling prices?

This is nice but with a correctly selected monthly bundle of minutes my reasonably consistent month on month usage means I seldom pay extra and I don't forfeit too many bundled minutes at months end either.

EDIT: Yes the first option would suit if say my Mrs and I got it, but that would involve us both investing in new handsets and probably signing term contracts for a very small saving over the status quo of VF bestmates - would take years to pay off.

i can imagine telecom wont come out with thrilling plans, but something different.. they wouldn't want to come out with their BEST! when theirs competition who will have to meet xt's current plans or better, thats where xt will come back again with something better, im guessing they'll play it smart till 2 degrees are out with their plans..

Nothing new there:
- Vodafone did shared minutes years ago on their corp plans - now superseded by pay per minute
- Free calling between users, again Vodafone have their versions of that
- on-net / off-net pricing? Huh? Aren't those up to 10 people all on-net?

So yes for some there will be great reason to change, because Telecom's plan ideas will suite some people. At the same time, there will be plenty of reason for some people to also stay with Vodafone too.

At the end of the day the launch of XT will bring nothing more than more choice.

The technology they're using (in essence) is and has already been here for a number of years.

Neither provider will want to get into a price war straight out of the gates as they've both enjoyed large profits for a number of years, why would they want to jeapordise that?

We "may" see prices drop when 2 Degrees come into the market, but again that depends on the market they'll be aiming for and how aggressive they want to be.

I agree completely - the XT network is all about increasing the quality of Telecom's mobile offerings.  It's not about reducing their costs so they can offer cheaper calls.  You can see that in their advertising and in the fact they're rolling out expensive, leading edge technology - they want a return on all that investment.

They are after the big business mobile contracts that Vodafone have been dominating, not the people who are looking for the cheapest deals.

Now they've announced the new phones - what's the deal with the pricing!?  Why is the N85 $300 more from Telecom than it is from Vodafone, whereas the pricing for the Sony Ericsson W705 seems to be quite good compared to pricing overseas?

Which network is likely to end up with the Palm Pre?

Theres a whole thread dedicated to this if you had of looked. Tongue out

I would like to know why the N85 is more expensive than vodafones too. They must not be getting as good a price on nokias as they are sony's etc.
