I just ordered one from Spark a couple of days ago - I'm on a wireless connection, though...but one of the features is meant to be that it can do fibre and 4g

I broadly like the performance of the smartmodem and its mesh extenders.

With one major niggle. On previous routers (the Huawei HG659, and even earlier Beklin Play Max) it was relatively simple to assign a static IP address to a lan device. However, after much poking around, I can figure out how to do this on the Smartmodem?

I have one device (my jellyfin server) where you have to manually input the ip address of the server into the clients (android and ios devices, android TV, Roku) app in order to connect to it. Which means that all the clients have to be updated if the smartmodem decides to give the server a new IP. Which it does from time to time if it has been shut down for a while. Hopefully it's just my technical incompetence, and there is a way to do this - any help appreciated?

2 quick questions
I vaguely remember someone mentioning these issues at sometime , somewhere

- when the wifi signal is marginal (but 100% usuable)
is there a wifi issue, where wifi intermittently looses connection , or looses internet even if still saying connected  ?
when it happens I often need manually reconnect to the SSID

- is the 2.4GHz separated from the 5Ghz wifi , even though both are on the same subnet
ie printer on 2.4Ghz , laptop on  5.8Ghz . cant ping or communicate with printer from the  laptop on 5.8Ghz.

these 2 issues are on completely different sites, so unrelated
Cheers

An answer to one of your questions:

With my PC on 5GHz WiFi I can Ping my Brother printer which is only on 2.4GHz WiFi.

- PC on static IP 192.168.1.101

- Skinny Smart Modem, Band Steering OFF. IP 192.168.1.254.

- Printer Brother MFC-L5755DW static IP 192.168.1.210

Your question has mixed info and not enough info to segment the issue.

Are you on Fibre or DSL?

Do you have the same dropouts when using a cable to your modem/router?

Do other computers have the same dropout symptoms?

Does you modem show a Green LED?

Have you tried Pings and Tracert through various nodes in your network?

Is your computer WiFi hardware fairly recent and are the drivers up to date?

My questions were very specific
I asked if there were known specific wifi issues (with these Smart Routers)
:-)

if there were these known Smart Router issues, I'd just replace the routers .

Edit , I did a search through this thread , I see a few having similar issues : strange wifi dropouts , sometimes showing as still connected but no internet on the device.
I dont have this issue if Im in the same room as the router , only at the other end of the house .
So I'll put it down to weird issues when theres marginal wifi signal strength . I can live with it, its not a huge issue .

Does anyone know if I can turn off the green light on the front of Spark Modem?

I have a TP link modem which I can turn off the light and also can schedule it to turn on during the day time only.

Do people on Fibre Max with the Smart Modem or Smart Modem 2 mind sharing their wifi speeds please? My wifi speeds appear to be restricted to around 300Mbps and i was curious if changing the modem to one of these will resolve it. Thanks

Advise your client device(s) and someone will advise likely maximum throughput.

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

  1. Open any web browser such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge.
  2. In the address bar, type 192.168.1.254 and press enter.
  3. Enter your modem login information. By default, the User name and Password will both be admin. This information is also located on the bottom of your modem.
  4. Click Home Network from the menu bar.
  5. Click WLAN Settings from the left hand side and choose Advanced Settings from the options below.

What does it say in "11n/ac bandwidth" ?
