Without reasonable $ deals what's the point? 2Degrees you get one chance to make an impact, don't blow it!

What's interesting is that the Herald is running a story today, saying that 91% of kiwis don't use their phones for the Internet.

So if Telecom's not going to be aggressive on price, then both Telecom and Vodafone will be competing for a very tiny market segment and 2? has a huge window of opportunity.

It's somewhat premature to write XT off yet though as we don't have the full line-up of plans.

What will be the bad points of having a vodafone phone on the telecom network?
Will we not be able to access telecoms equivalent of vodafone live? And will this mean that (if there were free or cheap 3g services such as bebo?) we will not be able to access these servies and get them free?

The phone I had my eyes on hadn't been announced for the new network.

There are very very few current Vodafone NZ supplied phones that will work on the XT Network - the frequency that the XT Network uses is different from the frequencies that Vodafone NZ uses.

I know about the different frequencies etc.. The k850i is sold at some vodafone stores and has 3g 850. This is the phone I was looking at.

Assuming they have deals where some services such as Bebo could be free, would we need the telecom firmware phones with TWorld Content portal, or could we just use the phones internet browser?

I think he means as in the limitations of the firmware "customisations" that the companies inflict upon us. A Vodafone phone is going to have a (usually fixed) "Live!" icon on the main screen which is obviously going to be completely useless if the phone is used on the Telecom Network (i.e. the cross-compatible Nokia's).

What do you mean VF offers very few handsets that run on XT? I count at least 6.....Jeez you'd think people could be happy for once, oh wait, everyone wants what the 'greener' side has.
Like, how about: There aren't many handsets VF has for 850 Mhz because, again, Telecom has set up a new network that most countries DON'T use.
It's like saying "Hey I'm a New Zealander and I want the same benefits as other mobile phone users around the world, BUT, I want to choose the handset that I WANT, and, I WANT IT CHEAP!".

Sorry friends, won't happen in NZ. At least not until we get another couple 'o million+ population, or, as other geeks have pointed out, Telecom and VF (and to a lesser extent 2deg/Compass etc) enter a price war, which they aren't going to do because it would kill revenue that all Telcos need.
By the way, this post isn't directed at anyone, just a blah in general. It's become a real yawn to say the least at the amount of times I've had to explain why NZ Telcos charge what they do for handsets and pricing in NZ, especially to roaming Aussies. Drives me insane! Spare a thought to all of us out there whether it be VF or XT stores.
We're doing the best we can but you just can't please everyone :-)

PS: Now that I'm a geekzone user, should I list all my hardware specs below as a signature?

If this is your point, then what would you say about Vodafone's new 900MHz network - that's not used in many countries either?

Reality is 850MHz is used in Australia (Telstra) and the U.S. (AT&T Wireless), provides good coverage, and roaming is possible in other countries with 2100 MHz networks (most of Europe).

It wasn't deployed to make it easier to swap SIM cards on Vodafone handsets. It was deployed to provide Telecom with a single WCDMA platform, good roaming capabilities and ability to deliver new services not possible with the previous network.

I read somewhere this week that Telecom's network WCDMA 850 has over 150+ handsets available for it, while 900Mhz has only 50. I'm sure I'm going to get jumped on as I can't remember the exact numbers, but remember it suprising me how much more popular Telecom's choice of network was.

I'm struggling to keep my mouth shut about the new XT telly Ad's I saw today which are airing soon.

It looks like Telecom finally has it's game on.

And as for those people saying Telecom's network isn't a broadband solution, people if I didn't run a server at home I would be using Telecom 3G instead of broadband at home. Why wouldn't you?

Cool thanks. Just realised with your list that my Mrs' phone (Nokia 5610 XpressMusic) is 850 WCDMA, that could be handy :-)
