im pretty sure what Telecom are doing here is trying to get people to use their mobiles in different ways, like if you don't use the internet on your phone, by giving you free data they are encouraging you to use mobile data more in the hope that you will buy a plan off them

same with the free minutes, hoping people will start using their mobiles to call people more.

you see where I'm going with this? ;)

I don't understand why people can't see that it was only going to be temporary. The term 'bonus' would logically imply that it was above the norm. As someone has said before on this thread, it was supposed to end last September but was extended until now.

Of course it was a ploy to get people to join XT but what's so wrong with that? That's what promo's are for after all.

The Wife ran out of credit on her XT phone today.... And switched to 2degrees.

This changed Telecoms value proposition somewhat and made it harder to justify the extra cost for slightly better reception.

Temporary promo or not, my home 'broadband' now costs $20 extra per month, and I will be seriously looking at alternatives again..  And having 10 free international minutes to use on my T-stick does not help my decision..

I've never genuinely complained about promotions ending. Never.

I didn't complain about the Non-stop TXT ending. Nor did I complain when the TiVo unmetered data (not even an intended "feature") ended.

People feel DUPED over this because it was NEVER clear that this was a temporary "promotion".

It is quite clear to me reading through anything I can find on the internet put out by Telecom and their partners that the wording was GROSSLY misleading if this was indeed a time limited promotion.

I'm not familiar with any other Telecom limited time promotion that did not clearly state a specific end date.

You say that this was "supposed" to end in September 2010 - I never saw that anywhere except today when Google threw up the Geekzone thread complaining about there being an end date to this topup bonus. It was NEVER in any of the XT launch materials, nor in any brochures/pamphlets/information that was advertising the topup bonuses.

Whether legally right or wrong, Telecom have totally dropped the ball on this one. I've been very forgiving of them recently despite many people with long memories that continue to hate on them. Maybe they were right about leopards and spots.

Once again I reiterate my point that this whole thing has been very "un-Reynolds-like" and definitely a blot on the company.

Whether it was a promotion or not is now academic.
The fact is the cost of using XT prepay has risen by up to 33%, depending on individual circumstances.
I'm surprised that some members aren’t concerned by this?

I was the OP in the September thread over Bonus Top Ups ending. At the time I only saw the reference to top up ending in September in 1 brochure only. At the time I had a good look at other Telecom advertising and saw no other references to bonus Top ups ending. At the time after looking at the replies in the tread I came to the conclusion that reference was a typographical error that has sliped through proof reading.

Sorry to be so rude, I agree that thy are effectivly putting their prices up by 33%. But you should have seen it coming... I once moved to xt because of the bonus topup, but the new guys took my fancy 12 months ago.

It's probably really not fair commenting on this subject (especially against the people who are complaining) when you are not a customer yourself.  Doing so only appears as if you are trolling for an argument.

I myself use XT (infrequently) for my iPad.  Although I've only ever topped up my SIM once ($20 +$5 bonus), I can see where others are coming from.  When I do top up again, nothing but bonus data will be useful to me, so I am in a position to feel the pain of other customers.

Technically that only applies to the people who topup $60, which I would guess very few people do.

Most people would topup $10 or $20.  Topping up $10 never got you any bonus credit at all (and doesn’t get you any prizes now) - so no change fo rthose people at all, if you only topup $20 then you only got $5 bonus credit, which means an effective price increase (for those people) of 25%.

(
(and if you want to get even more picky you could say that they aren’t increasing their prices,  they are just removing a discount that customers who topup high amounts have been getting up until now)

However, depending on the prize you get you *might* find yourself better off than with the bonus credit anyway.

For example, say you topped up $20 and would have spent the $25 total credit on $12 text and $13 of calling (just under 15 minutes worth)

If you topup $20 now and receive 10 minutes of calling as the prize instead of the $5 of credit,  then you can make the same spend pattern ($12 text and 15 mins of calling) and spend only $12+ 5x89c+10 x 0c = $16.45 which leaves you with $3.55 left over.  IOW in that situation you were better off with the prize than with the bonus credit.

On the other hand, if the prize you receive is not so useful to you (as some people have found in this thread) then you wouldn’t view it the same way.

Really it all depends on what stuff you do with your phone.

Some people will value some prizes better than others.  One person in this thread got 10 international minutes – which he didn’t value because he doesn’t ever call anyone overseas.  However if my wife had received that prize she would be pretty happy. She calls her sister in the UK about once a month and normally those ten minutes would have cost her about $9-$10 I think.  Almost twice the value to her of $5 of credit she would have gotten with bonus topup.

It’s like a lucky dip. Some prizes you will like, some you won’t.  (And if you are using mobile broabband then you won’t like any except for ones which give you data!)

Would they still take your fancy if they gave notice and withdrew Magic Topups?

There is no specified or implied end date to this on anything I can find from 2 Degrees.

Having said that it would really surprise me if this company would have the balls to pull a stunt like this one.

Just for the sake of accuracy, the effective "price rise" is a minimum of 25%, not 33%.

Also people with T-sticks don't qualify (not sure why? Can you just put the T-stick SIM into a normal phone and topup to qualify?).

One of biggest effects of this change aside from raising effective prices is that people can't top up $20 and get 2 $12 "packs". Eg. 120Mb data and TXT 2500.

My son who used to spend $40 - $60 per month, plus the bonus topups is now porting to 2D once his pre pay credit has run out, ending a 10 year loyal run with telecom.  He topped up yesterday and "won"  10 free international  voice calls which is totally useless to him.  Telecom often do the right thing, then without warning, shoot themselves in the foot, thus costing them customers. Makes you wonder how much research they do before releasing crazy schemes like this which are going to mainly affect their younger customer base in the long term, loose them customers who are very likely never to return. Over several years, that represents one hell of a lot in lost turnover.

Actually  at the risk of moving of topic I will disagree with you on 2 degrees IIRC when 2 degrees launched the wording used was they will always give a touch a magic. The implication I took from the way it was worded was that They would always offer customers a bonus but that the details of the bonus could change
