You don't need to look for another ISP. E-mail is one thing that's not tied to ISPs - you can have your own domain, or you can use Google Gmail, Windows Live Mail, even Yahoo! (but if you don't like Xtra's...). You can also use our own Geekzonemail. But certainly e-mail, like hosting is not something you are tied up to your ISP.

Unfortunately in my case it probably does...
I use the webmail interface to check my mail during the day
And then a POP3 connection to actually download any real messages to home over dial-up

You can use Gmail webmail during the day and download via POP3. You can use Windows Live during the day and download to Outlook through its Connector or Windows Live Mail client. The same for Geekzonemail.
