SteveON: Sorry to be so rude, I agree that thy are effectivly putting their prices up by 33%. But you should have seen it coming... I once moved to xt because of the bonus topup, but the new guys took my fancy 12 months ago.

Would they still take your fancy if they gave notice and withdrew Magic Topups?

There is no specified or implied end date to this on anything I can find from 2 Degrees.

Having said that it would really surprise me if this company would have the balls to pull a stunt like this one.

Actually  at the risk of moving of topic I will disagree with you on 2 degrees IIRC when 2 degrees launched the wording used was they will always give a touch a magic. The implication I took from the way it was worded was that They would always offer customers a bonus but that the details of the bonus could change

IMO the wording used by Telecom and 2 Degrees was to all intents and purposes similar.

I agree that 2 Degrees always implied that this offer could be subject to change (ie. the "Magic" might be changed into different "Magic").

However from Telecom's own (now defunct page), here is the wording:

Top up your XT Prepaid mobile

Topping up your XT Prepaid mobile or T-Stick can be a rewarding experience.

Not only do you get up and running again and in touch with your friends and family, but with Prepaid on the XT network you get bonus credit every time you top up. And the more you top up the better...

Both company's wordings state that "every time you top up" you get...

In 2DM case, you get "Magic", with XT you get bonus credit (the more the better).

Once 2degrees have enough customers I bet they will pull the plug on magic top up or increase their pricing. This is all about having the right business model, businesses are here to maximise profit, wouldn't you want to maximise your income? We as the customers want competition and can jump ship anytime we want. Let's use that privilege eh.

Why would they consider putting their prices up? That wouldn't happen or they would loose 90% of their customers...

I can't believe telecom, they seem to stumble from one customer relations disaster to the next.

Mobile prices have been dropping since 2d entered the market and we have seen VF release new plans (prepay and postpaid) to counter 2d, but telecom has just carried on with the same voice plans they launched with nearly 2 years ago seemingly oblivious to the market.

They have bumped their text plans to levels way beyond the needs of anyone I know but left voice alone.

Sure they are currently running double minutes but only on a 2 year contract, and you need double the minutes for their plans to look competitive. Now they have effectively increased prepaid rates.

Telecom are just so slow to move be it mobile or fixed line services, that I think they will just continue to lose more and more customers as time goes by.

IMHO XT is the best network in NZ for mobile data speed and coverage so am willing to pay a slight premium for it but there is a point where you go from paying a premium to being ripped off and you have to change providers.

Thanks for all the comments. I have really appreciated those of you who have contacted me directly with constructive concerns and suggestions.

I have spoken with our product and marketing team. It does concern them that you feel you were mislead about Bonus Top Ups, it was never our intention.

Top Up & Win is simply a fun promotion to continue getting bonus value from your XT (and now CDMA) prepaid connection.

The guys are sorry that Prepaid Mobile Broadband customers are excluded from the current promotion, it is their intention to do our best so that this is not the case with future campaigns.

Through your feedback we will be making changes for future promotions.

Neal.

Really nice of you to forumulate a response Neal. Thanks!

From what I have read in the thread, we are all "tackling the ball, not the man".

From my personal point of the view the worst thing to come out of this is that the intolerable 89c/min prepaid calling rate was always something I could "forgive" knowing that the topup bonus effectively brought this down to something more easy to stomach (even though it was still high).

One of the biggest problems with the current promotion (as I'm sure you've picked up) is that people feel cheated due to the high chance of "winning" prizes that are of absolutely no use to them. From a cynical point of view, this is probably deliberate so that Telecom can say they are giving away "millions of dollars worth of prizes" which are worth only tens of thousands to the ordinary customers.

Smacks of Vodafone's "$400 worth of TXTs" for $10 garbage!

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

To where??.  I assume people went to 2Ds because of the pricing their current carrier charges

Can seem to edit the above. Pity I can't retrieve the ring tone. I get a message saying that the content is not compatible with my handset..

I just won 20 free international minutes for my data stick.

So I had to waste time and data to get... nothing.
