Hey guys,
Notice things have been running a little slower today and there is an IPv6 logo next to the Geekzone logo. Did a trace and its to somewhere offshore with TERRIBLE latency?

We use an IPv6 tunnel. If you don't want that, change to the IPv4 address.

Seriously? You decided to turn v6 on this website over a tunnel landing in LAX? I'd turn v6 off until your current provider support's v6

No need to be sarcastic.

It sounds like the wrong headers are being sent. Also make sure www.geekzone.co.nz *AND* geekzone.co.nz are both set to the same IPv4.

Seriously. This was done some time ago, and until our provider has IPv6 enabled I won't change this.

I actually pay a lot of attention to data we collect. Our audience is 45% New Zealand, and of those 75% is in Auckland.

We only have a very very small IPv6 audience - under 0.5%.

I tried to get a local POP, ended up nowhere. I gave an option to those 0.5% by having a pop. If not satisfied I am happy to just removed the AAAA addresses and leave at it.

To be honest I think you should pull the record, I either have have to disable v6 on my computer (not going to happen, v6 is actually handy when you deploy it), Blackhole the GZ v6 range with dst net unreachable or just stop coming to GZ. Then have a nice chat to your host and see why v6 isn't an option right now, There's too many DC's around willing and happy to provide v6 right now for any hosting firm not to offer it.

GZ is a bit of a freak case in NZ, most traffic goes offshore anyway so tunnel or not the pings are pretty close to v4 but any NZ hosted website really shouldn't liven up v6 over a tunnel when v4 is over APE etc too many NZ ISP's flicking v6 on

Out of interest any spike in v6 traffic on the 5th?

edit:// This of course being a prime example right here of v6 just being turned on at an office/home and the end user not knowing whats going on

From my understanding, Geekzone has an IPv6 tunnel provided by Hurricane Electric, served from a PoP located in Singapore. This would be HE's geographically closest PoP to NZ. I'm making this assumption based on the source address of the return IPv4 leg of a 6to4 connection (216.218.221.42, tserv1.sin1.he.net).

In my case (Wellington, ISP TelstraClear), an IPv6 connection to geekzone.co.nz takes the following route:

The fact that my packets cross the Pacific Ocean twice on their journey to Singapore is not the fault of Geekzone. It's most likely due to TelstraClear routing any traffic to Hurricane Electric via their Los Angeles PoP. This is probably as a default route through TelstraClear's upstream provider, Reach. A similar scenario would apply for others who see their traffic going via the west coast of the USA. Most ISPs should be able to implement a quicker (but not necessarily cheaper) route via Australia if they had reason to.

In general, if connections show strange or inefficient routing, your ISP would be the first port of call for fixing the problem.

For the record, I am in favour of Geekzone keeping the AAAA record for geekzone.co.nz active.

Here are the number of visits in June around that date:

30th May: 46
31st May: 43
1st June: 38
2nd June: 27
3rd June: 19
4th June: 15
5th June: 31
6th June: 43
7th June: 50
8th June: 40
9th June: 31
10th June: 25

We had 568,732 visits in the last 30 days. Of those we had 962 visits using IPv6. That's 0.16%.

I can't remember now, but it didn't work - either it wasn't assigned, or something strange.
