every time i post i am said to be trolling ? i am not sure what a message board is for if it is not discuss a topic in full and not every one agrees with every thing all the time thats life

I've been wondering the same why would anyone want to stich up for any underperforming ISP ?

Don't we all want the fastest internet?

Probably because they work for the Telco who owns said ISP and that Telco provides their connection for free...

I don't like it and I won't butt out. When a moderator locks a thread it doesn't give you license to start a new one. That thread was locked because it would just start the kind of flaming that we have been trying to reduce since the Go Large fiasco.

Also there is no free speech on Geekzone, it is private property and the rules are set down by freitasm and enforced by him and us moderators.

If you don't like it then just click the nice 'X' button on your browser.

This post is directed at everyone (and no one in particular).

There is no such thing as free speech on this privately owned forum. If you want free speech, get your own website, or other platform from which to announce your views.

A quick look at some other forums based around IT & Telecommunications in New Zealand reveals that forums where users post whatever they feel like, with no great effort made by the sites owners, very quickly degenerate into a wasteland, where the signal to noise ratio makes it barely worthwhile visiting.

The way that the OPs post was structured was certainly crossing into the boundaries of a troll, even if it wasnt intended that way.

Perhaps different wording might have elicited different responses, or maybe even avoidance of the thread being locked?

Once again, Geekzone is not a publicly owned site for people to say what they wish. It is privately owned, and we have rules and guidelines whcih must be followed, and team members have a certain amount of discretion to lock threads in keeping with the sites desire to remain focussed, and be a valuable source of information, and avoid trolling, spam, slanging matches, misinformation, and other things that we feel may contribute negatively to the experience people get when they come here.

We do this because we care about the quality of the whole experience.

P.S. - My partner and I both work for Gen-i, and yes, along the way all our Telecom landline services, broadband and mobile get paid for, but that has nothing to do with it, and I seriously resent any inference that it affects the way these forums are run. We are just as quick to shut down threads that involve Telstra or Vodafone, should the thread be going downhill.

I would also note that I cant wait for number portability so I can take my existing 027 personal number to Vodafone to use on my existing Vodafone handset (I pay VFNZ more money that I pay TNZ). I am also a paying Skype and a paying VFX customer (both identified as competitors and potential threats to Telecoms traditional tolls and landline services).

If you stick around long enough, and take some notice, you will see that the people who run this site do so because they care out the 'community' we have here. We have not achieved some sort of status as moderators/admins/contributers/editors or whatever simply to push the beleifs of our respective employers.

And good point - I spose GZ isn't a democracy however as we all know the roflcopter pwns ur sauce. An interesting point is raised though - if GZ inhibits the language used on the site - do they bare some responsibility for whats said on the site? And how far does the responsibility go?

I seriously doubt it it.

This is not about taking responsibility for things said on the site, its about closing down threads that we beleieve will negatively impact this community. It has nothing to do with whether we agree with, or endorse what is said by any person at any time.

I totaly understand you want to keep topics clean and consise but this posting hadent jumped on to the back of another topic.

it still beggs the question why so many people stick up for the ISP's ?

I have never stuck up for my ISP, but I have regularly stated that I am happy with my broadband performance in general. I get maximum line connect speeds, good off peak throughput (5 - 7 Mbps), awesome uploads 24/7 (~700Kbps when I was unconstrained, now 128, which is what i was promised). I get 2 - 5Mbps national downloads during peak times, and my international bandwidth at all times is just as terrible as other Go large users. I understand that for $50, I cant reasonably expect much better service, from any ISP, not just Xtra.

sorry to go off topic here but re "number portability" isnt that going to make the moble networks a shead load of money ?

at the moment i pick to call telecom phones from a land line and vodafone numbers from my vodafone moble as this is the cheapest way to to it ?

how will i know what i am being charged when the number dosent tell me where i am caling ?

since Fast as your line I have never seen 5Mbps not even 4Mbps hardly ever 3Mbps ocasionaly 2Mbps and please dont mention international speeds

i am sure i am not alone with my problem and the frustrasion is huge !!!

tony i am sure you would feel the same as us not so lucky as you

yes i am only 2k from my exchange and it use to get 3Mbps constant

No idea really I havent looked into it. However I'm gonna jump on board with the 'im happy with my internet service' boat. $50 for 40gb of 256k. The helpdesk has been awesome, and although it's had a few small glitches it generally owns the sauce. Thats some free advertising for Orcon right there.
