Just thinking as you do between finishing work 2300 and starting again at 0730 this morning and realising that there seems to be little discussion this year on the likelihood of these evenings being held this year.

I don't know if Mauricio has anything officially planned this year but Im keen to look at some regional events being held-even if its just locally organised for local members organised by local members. Regional Im my terms may well be more local than past event as not necessarily be in the major centres to attract attendance from the regions.

Think I saw somewhere on this site somewhere that this may well be an option for people if nothing is formally organised.
I apologise to Mauricio in advance if there is already a thread on this idea??

Depends on local sponsorship or if we just pay as we go ourselves- I know Im happy just to go with the flow and pay my way.
Even if Mauricio does have formal organised events organised it may be useful to look at more regional groups getting together.

Any thoughts from others be useful.
Not trying to detract from Mauricios more formal Major centre events- as nothing appears to have been mooted for this year so far.

There will be no Geekzone Pizza 2013 as all the companies approached declined sponsorship and making this 200 people affair a "free" ($5) event is hard without sponsorship.

Nate is running the Geekzone IRL in Auckland and you should register. It's $20 per person and additional drinks are sponsored by The Data Centre.

Why would it need to be free? I expect most people on this website are in IT, and as such buying their own pizza and drinks shouldn't be an issue.

I was a member of a random chat website when I lived in Ireland. They had what they called the "first Wednesday". The first Wednesday of each month the guy in charge chose a pub (it was Ireland after all), anyone who felt like it turned up and had a drink and some dinner. It worked well. Sometimes there were 3 people, sometimes 30.

Fixed typo in link.

A short version:

When we had the free pizza people would sign up and not show up. In a pizza evening for 60 people we had 65 bookings, and only 45 showed up. Obviously we still pay the venue for 60 people. At $23.50 per head that's some money lost there. Multiply it for three (AKL, WLG, CHC) and see we were losing money.

We then started charging $5. A good price. With sponsorship covering the pizza and drinks $5 was low enough for people to pay and if someone didn't show up then we would just use the money for more beer.

Sadly, this year none of the telcos I contacted wanted to sponsor the evenings.

Anyway, every time Nate is in WLG or myself/Scott/Sbiddle are in AKL we get together for drinks and dinner. We put on Twitter and some people join, usually ten people total.

So Nate decided to run a Geekzone night at his cafe (he runs 3bit.com and he owns a cafe with his girlfriend). Since there's no sponsor he was doing a good deal: $20 for two beers/glasses wine plus all you can eat food.

So that's it.

Happy to do something at Tuihana Cafe on a semi regular basis - doesn't have to be here, however without a major sponsor, there's no other way to keep costs down.

I agree with Timmmay. I don't see the lack of sponsorship as a major problem - I'd be quite happy for someone to just name a time and place and pay my own way from there.

I agree pay as you go and money up front or no booking, a deposit at least which would cover non shows

PS I don't work in IT but don't expect free anything

I have no problem in just saying "Folks, meetup at such place, date/time". The problem is that many places won't accept bookings for a large number without payment in advance or a set menu... Anything over 15 people is a problem. Check what Nate is doing in the Geekzone IRL thread.
