When copying and pasting from another website, is there a way of preserving formatting like paragraphs?

When I posted this:

all the paragraphs were removed.

No. The reason is that a lot of crap comes with formatting, so this is filtered out.

When I'm cutting and pasting, I tend to paste into notepad first, then copy and paste from there.

Ok, cheers. So the only alternative would be to manually edit a posting and re-insert the paragraphs, yes?

Or as above, copy into Notepad (or any other text editor, not word editor) and copy/paste from there.

I often get this when posting from IE 7 via the quick reply function. This is original text (not copied and pasted). Yes I know IE 7 is ancient but unfortunately it is the only browser that is installed on our main machines at work (running XP no less...), hopefully to be a thing of the past shortly with the move to 8.1.

I'm getting the same problem from IE8 posting original text and there seems to be no way to get paragraphs in.  I've tried copying and pasting via notepad and the problem still occurs.

The really annoying thing is it does not always happen.

I suspect this post is covering more than one issue. In either case you can just paste in the text


where you want the paragraph break to appear.

Doh. Failed to use the pre tag correctly.

Putting it a different way, paste in the br tag twice where you want the paragraph break to appear:

I wasn't using any tags, I was just typing the text after having clicked on the "Quote" button.  Then I pressed enter twice...

 

Which is what I did this time and this time it worked.  For some reason the problem with a "wall of text" only appears occasionally but when it does it just won't go away.

Next time it happens I'll use the "br" tag - thanks.

Sorry for the bump, but I just noticed this thread. If copying/pasting into a barebones text editor and then copying/pasting to Geekzone works, you can probably skip a step! If you use the keyboard shortcut "Ctrl+Shift+V", you will be able to paste the plaintext only with its formatting removed. This should save at least a bit of hassle. :)
