I have been a Geekzone member for several years now. I first became interested in computers almost when there first were personal computers in the modern sense, back in the early 1980s. My first real computer was a CP/M Kaypro, later followed by an early IBM PC clone. I taught myself assembly and became something of a hotshot with MS-DOS, but for various reasons did not pursue this interest as developments progressed. The result is that today, in my senior years, I know too much about too many things to be regarded as a novice, but not enough about anything to be able to do much on my own that is useful.

For me, finding Geekzone has been like finding water in the desert. There are a lot of technical help and advice sites out there and I have made use of many of them over the years, but nothing else I have found comes even close to Geekzone in terms of the scope of knowledge available and the willingness of others to share that knowledge, along with the general friendliness, helpfulness and patience that goes with that. I am particularly impressed by freitasm, who always seems to be on top of everything and is always quick to respond to any issue. I honestly don’t know how he finds the time for everything he does. Is he maybe one of those people who never sleep?

Of course he is ably assisted by many others. I particularly enjoy sbiddle’s postings. Regardless of who has answered my many questions over the years and provided me with so much invaluable information and advice, I feel it is over time to express my gratitude and appreciation to all who make Geekzone what it is. This really is an exceptional community and it deserves to be recognised. So thanks for the help guys and I will try to continue to return the favour by making whatever small contributions I can from time to time.

Yes, I have been here for over ten years and it's been a hugely valuable resource for me. I've particularly appreciated having opportunities over the years to meet many members in person, as it adds a human face to the postings that I read from day to day.

My enthusiasm for IT is lukewarm, so it's great that the forums branch into varied subject areas that I'm really interested in such as photography, hifi, motoring, etc.

+1 for this thread

I've found techie sites that I like more but this is undoubtedly the best for discussing the sort of practical and technical issues that are relevant for New Zealanders.

Maybe you're too well-rounded to be a real geek. smile
