So it starts: for seven days we will be accepting entries to our competition, part of the 31 Days of the Dragon.

If you don't know yet HP has partnered with 31 websites to give 31 HP HDX notebooks loaded with the ultimate hardware and software. Each site will give one of those beasts away - one a day during 31 days.

Enter our competition now, then follow to the 31 Days of the Dragon website to find out where to go next.

I know the chances are very slim being a worldwide contest, but i'm still hoping that i win it. It would look awesome on my desk.

It's a worldwide contest but it's guaranteed that 1 GZ user will be a winner as there is 1 laptop to giveaway for each site involved.

It's a worldwide contest but it's guaranteed that 1 GZ user will be a winner as there is 1 laptop to giveaway for each site involved.

But this sites competition is open to all, providing they register, so while a 'Geekzoner' will win, that 'Geekzoner' could be a new member from the other side of the world, who registered just to enter the competition...as can be done many of the other sites too.

And with this competitions details being promoted on every participating site, the members of each could be joining each site to enter, to give themselves as much chance as possible to win at least 1 HP laptop...

So there are no guarantee that the winner will any one of the current crop of regular NZ based Geekzoners.

It would be interesting to know how many new members signup during the competition, especially from overseas IP addresses.

True, but... We have had a good response in number of entries so far. I am happy to have new users registering on Geekzone because many of those may actually come back. I was surprised that a few of those new users are actually New Zealand-based who only found about Geekzone now through this competition - or only now decided to register because this was a big incentive (despite all the other prizes and giveaways we have had in the last three years, almost constantly).

Participating in the whole 31 Days of the Dragon was beneficial because of the amount of traffic generate between sites - and between those and the 31 Days of the Dragon hub site - which is actually hosted here on the Geekzone server.

I registered the 31 Days of the Dragon domain when we decided on a name for the promotion (check WHOIS). Most of the sites linked to the hub site since the beginning and it's shown a very good traffic to and from.

You'd be surprised with some facts:

1. According to Google Analytics Geekzone is the site with highest traffic to 31 Days of the Dragon, except for Google search;
2. New Zealand is the #2 in visitors to 31 Days of the Dragon, behind the U.S. only and ahead of every other country.

I was surprised as well, but it goes to show that our little Geekzone community is actually quite strong.

Of course participating on an international competition with US$ 160,000 in prizes is a grat way to promote the site - even within New Zealand. And I am sure everyone will be happy to know there's a good chance for a kiwi to win this machine, because so far the number of local and international entries is quite balanced.

What else you want to know?

To be honest I don't have the slightest bit of hope of winning the prize but I see great value in the increased traffic, especially international, to the site. If we get just a few more "regulars" with something decent to offer here in the forums, reviews, etc then I feel Geekzone's participation in the competition is a win for all of us.

Yeah I agree with scott, I don't see why increased traffic is a bad thing, the whole point of the competition really is for the sites to draw more readership. Yay for MF I hope it does Geekzone well

But more people visiting and registering gives me less chance of winning the laptop Tongue out

Thanks for the oppurtunity and good luck everyone! I have a question to ask though, once the answers are submitted, the contest submission page still shows up? Had a problem submitting actually, it never get past the submission page and then I got an error. So just wondering if my entry has been received or should I do it again.

Thanks! :-)

P.S. I am on dial-up but Geek Zone seems to load slower than other sites right now. Just wondering if thats happening to any one else?

How many entries received till now freitasm?

I will let everyone know the number of entries when it closes - I will post here.

No known problem, could it be because of international lines for you? Also check that Google and MyBlogLog work ok, since we load scripts from them.

Cheers

I'd say everyone has the same chance of winning as each other, unless there is a bug in whatever randomiser is being used...

Maybe it needs to be an open source draw program, running on open source hardware? Tongue out
