On 21st October we will be moving Geekzone to a new server and expect small periods of downtime.

Geekzone will be moved to a new HP server. While the new server is already being configured, a short outage will be need so that we can transfer the latest database to the new server, and swap IP addresses.

We expect to have only a couple of brief outages during the morning period.

For those of you here is some more information...

Geekzone currently runs on an Intel Xeon "Nocona" dual-core 3GHz box with 3GB RAM and two 70GB SCSI discs. The application runs on native Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition and Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

The new server is a HP DL360 Intel 5400 quad-core 3GHz box with 10GB RAM, four 146GB HDD and ILO2 for remote lights out management. We are migrating Geekzone to a virtual machine based on Microsoft Hyper-V. We will continue to run Geekzone with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition and Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

The current box will be used for database mirroring as a hot backup, and also used for development of new features for the site.

Thanks to HP and Microsoft for their support - we couldn't do this upgrade without their help.

I've completed this migration earlier this morning - all working fine on the new server... Now for some admin tasks in the new environment.
