During the Moderators' Meetup in Wellington last weekend we came up with a list of features to add to Geekzone. Geekzone Live was one of them.

I have added now a minimum number of posts requirement to some forums. This means new users will not be able to create new topics, or reply to ongoing topics in some forums.

Initially we are bringing this to "Offers/Wanted" and "Geekzone".

We have always removed posts from Offers/Wanted when the user is new - most of the times we see Trade Me sellers trying to link to their auctions, without have ever participated on Geekzone. To help us keep Geekzone free of those we now require a certain number of posts before new users can create or respond to topics in that section.

A different situation happens on "Geekzone", which was created to discuss topics related to our site. A lot of new users post new topics on Geekzone, when they should really create those in appropriate forums. Because I am tired of moving those topics I decided to implement a minimum number of posts before new users can create new discussions or reply on that section.

Moderators, Administrators and Trusted users are not affected by these limits.

Sounds like a fair enough solution to me.

Perhaps you could just have a page in the geekzone forum before allowing low post count users telling them what the forum is for, since there may be legit reasons that someone new wants to post in there?

Fair dues. Are you going to publish the post limits or leave them private?

Sounds fair, how many posts does a new user need to post in those sections now?

We will be changing that depending on how it goes, but the system is configured to ten and five.

Good move freitasm, and I like how Geekzone has really implemented a lot of new useful features over the past 6-12 months.

I was wondering if you can tell how many times users actually visit Geekzone? Wouldn't that be a good indication of their interest?

Users may come to read many postings without responding but just to find information on a particular topic of interest to them. If they don't post it doesn't mean they're not interested.

I have visited You Tube many times but never registered or signed on and posted a comment. The same applies to Geekzone, I read much more than I comment on.

Yes, we see this and a lot more. It's not a question of "interest". First, the "Offers/Wanted" charter is explicit "only users who participate can post". What we see is a lot of first recently registered time posters trying to link to their own Trade Me auctions or company's websites.

This is not allowed. We are just automating the process to help us get these spammers out of the way.

Good ideas.

What's the deal with the "Trusted" moniker?  How does that get allocated?

Geekzone users can be "Trusted" by our moderators. When you see a post with the "Trusted" icon you know we either met that user in person, or consider that user to have special skills and knowledge.

As per this post - have a nice day :)
