Snikch: The geekzone format annoys me a little because so much of the left side of the screen is taken up by it, most sites have it on the right.

You mean the Geekzone Forums, right? Because we have the news section as well, I think you know that?

action55: Ads are important for geekzone, It is how the site stays around. I dont think people would pay for the service.
Its no big deal, I think the site is well designed to handle the ads.
I can understand peoples issues with them, I think i have just got used to ads running on site these days.

That's correct. People fail to understand this... Hosting costs money. Traffic costs money. Working on the site costs money.

I work full time on Geekzone. It's not free. I left a day job more than two years ago to dedicate 100% of my time to the site, so that people could have access to the kind of information we provide here, with the rich feature list we are bringing.

And yet, some people want all for free - and note that no one is being charged anything.

And it's not like we run those annoying cursor or screensaver ads. It's not like we run those annoying popups. It's not like we run those TV ads.

Still people want everything for free. If you don't like the ads you can either block them, or simply stop visiting. But don't tell me how to run the business side of the site.

Funny, I was thinking about starting a thread called "Doctor Jeff Obed must die" before I read this. It's a very effective ad, very eye catching and the first time around it's quite funny, though you do get sick of him after a while - like most ads. But I have no problem with the ads on Geekzone, at least they are within the bounds of good taste.

I'm not complaining about the ad's, but using a greasemonkey script would still generate the revenue.

It's just that I have no plan on clicking the ad's, which is nothing against the site or anything it's that I just generally don't follow banner ads.

I fully support using advertising to support this site, but this Nigerian dude is seriously getting on my nerves! TBH the ads on this site never bothered me - until this guy popped up!

Proof of concept.

Hides all ad related content from view, but still downloads.

You will need greasemonkey installed first (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748)

I make no guaruntees this will work or won't screw up your pages, its just an example.

i have only ever seen one screensavers advert here which mauricio put a foot in quick smart.

The advert's here are very relevant, asides the funny script scare of a couple of weeks ago, i have no problems apart when using a mobile device which can get choked.

Ads to subsidise free or cheap content i'm all for, just don't try and shove them in my face for stuff i'm paying top dollar for. (sky, trademe)

As there is no non flash version I just see a flashblock icon here.

I think it still loads them briefly before removing them since I sometimes see a flash of it in there.

Remove flash if animations bother you or install flashblock. Also deals to obnoxious music on myspace profiles ;)

I use Adblock Plus (with a Cédrics Liste Deutschland filter subscription) & FlashBlock with Firefox 2.0.0.5 and didn't even realize Geekzone had banner ads. The only ads displayed are the occasional 125x125 images on the left bar and, although I could opt to block them, to be honest, I don't even see them anymore. There are so many ads on the net these days I just 'tune them out'.

That's an interesting point about bandwidth costs though. Surely banner images and shockwaves are the most bandwidth-intensive part of the page (the rest is just text/avs)? I have no metrics here, just guessing. If this is true, perhaps a text-based ad medium a la Google ads would be more efficient?

Out of interest, how does one become a Geekzone subscriber and how much does it cost? I wouldn't mind supporting this site if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

EDIT: omg, I have no friends.

That's the point, it's not affecting revenue for the ads because they are still "viewed" whereas ad blockers don't even download or view them.

or you could try using my insane Win XP Pro installation which plays nothing, even though I want it to. Turn them on and watch, great, shut down and restart, all dead again. Maybe the next service pack will put it back the way it was (or maybe it's my LAN admin messing things up, but I guess I get what I pay for there).
