One thing is someone with an opinion different from yours. Another thing is someone who posts something to annoy others.

It's a fine line detecting the difference here. Just because you disagree with someone it doesn't mean that person is a troll.

Is there a problem with "trolls" or is it a perceived problem?  Sometimes the cure is worse than the complaint.

I wonder if a "Report This Post" option is better and let the Mods decide whether or not a post is hidden.  I know the Mods probably don't need more work but so often when trying to fix such a problem you end up making it worse.

We do have a REPORT THIS POST in every post - it's in OPTIONS menu.

Not all posts - I see we can't report you! (or I assume other moderators?)

I'm curious about the for/against argument for +1 and -1 (Reddit-style upvotes). I've always reviled Facebook's lack of a 'thumbs down' feature.

The problem with having a -1 button is that soon we would see people ganging up on someone. At least the way it is now people need to actually articulate a reply to show their different opinions.

That's fair enough, but a drastic accumulation of -1's should eventually clue someone in that their opinions are unpopular or that they just should perhaps go on a posting holiday for a while. And this is Geekzone, not YouTube. wink Folks around here strike me as a lot more mature and objective when it comes to differing opinions. I know I've both given and received plenty of +1's from people who generally don't agree with me about other things in the past.

I'd have some concerns at its potential of being used as a method of group control - there are sometimes threads on GZ where posters can get given a roasting, and often this appears to be because their views differ significantly from the dominant thinking.

There are also some GZ members whose every posting is almost always guaranteed to irritate me (and I'm sure I illicit the same frustration in them) - I'd fear a -1 system could be overused in such situations!

I don't think anything needs to be done. Trolls just aren't that much of a problem. There are plenty of people I disagree with and even -1 is just inviting conflict and alienation of a different type. Just because an opinion differs from that which is popular, doesn't automatically make it wrong.

An ignore button could work, other forums have it, but it doesn't stop you seeing quoted text from that person.

There are plenty of features I wish for that would be higher priority to my thinking.

I've seen people getting plenty of responses illustrating just how unpopular their opinions are and completely ignoring it - Not sure why they would take any more notice of -1s. And I agree with freitasm - disagreeing (i.e. -1) should require some explanation of what\why you disagree so is best handled by a reply, whereas a +1 doesn't as it's more likely just a "me too\I agree\good point" post, so the 2 don't necessarily go hand in hand.

Hmmm. It could be.
