Like JonB, I find those Air New Zealand adverts to be highly intrusive, also I suspect they are chewing through my data cap and clogging up my ADSL (, UFB 'after June 2019' ) connection.
I only see them at home, despite being a subscriber, because when I'm on GeekZone from work my employer uses an adblocker that I can't turn off (and frankly I don't want to) and can't configure for 'whitelisting'

I'm not a subscriber, I choose to see the ads and support GZ in that way instead. I'm aware the option is there to subscribe, but please respect that, just as some people choose to subscribe, others choose to view the ads. Each for their own reasons, but both support GZ financially.

IME @freitasm has always taken on board constructive feedback on ads, removing any specific problematic ones, and with the exception of the recent handful mentioned above for Air NZ etc. GZ ads are not too visually distracting or intrusive.

I mentioned it a week or so back, but the animation on those rollover ads (even when not expanded) is using heaps of processor resource, and particularly with multiple tabs open, causing noticable slowdown, and CPU fans to start screaming - perhaps they could be completely static like most of the other ads until the rollover???

@PolicyGuy if you are a subscriber, then you should be able to turn ads on or off in your GZ settings page.

@PolicyGuy Same thing with me. At work my employer uses network wide ad blocking. You're not alone here :)

I think it is unfair if you use an ad blocker. I have spent countless hours providing free assistance to others on here for networking issues, netflix etc and without a platform like Geekzone you wouldn't have people like me helping others out. Ads pay for the server(s), bandwidth, domain name, Cloudflare subscription etc creating an incredibly fast site for us to use and a subscription is only $25/yr if you don't like ads.

I don't want to see a site like this go just because others don't want to pay their fair share. @1101 you've had tonnes of free advice on this forum that would have saved you tonnes of money so what is $25?

I wish I could give more than one +1 for this. I absolutely agree 100% with the last paragraph. I can't stand most ads because of their intrusiveness and I think that is entirely the fault of the advertisers. If the ads were just static images, as in magazines, I wouldn't have a problem with them, as I do not have a problem with them in magazines, and I might even occasionally glance at one. But the blinking, popping, jumping, shouting, self-starting video and audio animated crap drives me crazy so I use my ad blocker all the time. Sites that refuse to load with it I bypass. There are plenty of alternatives.

After several years as a lurker on Geekzone, I realised I was really getting a lot of value from it, precisely as described. This is different from just visiting a site once or twice because a search happens to send you there. Geekzone is a prime source of quality information and help and no-one holds a gun to your head if you do have an ad blocker. My conscience finally forced me to make a decision. I couldn't quite bring myself to turn on the ads so I subscribed instead. It is the best value for money I have ever had.

I think you are all (allmost all) missing the point.

The first experience of this site, for a new user would scare many away.
I got one hell of a shock when a 1/3 page ad took over the screen , I honestly thought the laptop may be infected. Popup popover ads, one sure sign of infected PC's , thats what new users may be thinking
If I didnt know this site well, I would had stayed well away after that .

And in general, dont use adlockers, then accept the consequences . They are known cases of malware delivered via website ads .

Sure, $25 isnt much. But as a point of principle, I avoid any autorenewing payments (although GZ is up front about it, many just sneek it in).
Others will think the same thing . You might get more subscription signups if thats not the default.

Strange thing, on old IE8(XP), far less ads .

If you don't like PayPal then Mauricio will let you pay into a bank account. That way there is no risk of auto renewal.

The ads were so bad, on a clients laptop, I wondered if it was infected
So I tried a clean chrome on a workshop laptop : just as bad

Really, having an ad that creeps up and takes over at least 1/3 the browser , thats enough to scare anyone

That's cool, you're entitled to your thoughts and feelings here.

The bit that is interesting for me is the advertisers may not twig to the image of their product they are conveying.

Those Air NZ ads that pop up like a video playing over the page turns me off them.

Yes they've got in my face, but they haven't left a good impression from the interaction.

Until I see website operators willing to take responsibility for malware delivered via their advertisers' networks or demand that those advertising networks compensate those affected by malware then I will opt out of the risk. Malware delivered via advertising is the largest threat to a regular PC user and no one is willing to take responsibility for it. If everyone else up the creek washes their hands of responsibility then I'm sure going to take three seconds and install uBlock Origin on everything I can.
