It doesn't stop at the moment - we still have the center column on a variable widht to accommodate all screen sizes. But I am looking into that because it seems people can't resize their 1680 pixels wide screenshots before posting here.

The only way would be to replace any image posts with hyperlinks because people can't use the IMG tag right and annoy everyone else...

If it's about the wallet, why not place most of the ads on the left and top/bottom, and the non-ad (but not main) content on the right while having a minimum width which pushes the (not main) content on the right off the side of a 1024x768 (or similar) res screen?

As-is, it's a major pain browsing the forum index and posting. The index is squished so much that an average of 7 forums fit in one window-height, and the post box extends beyond the right-hand border of the window.

nate:What size monitor are you using, and what resolution is it set at?

24" 1920x1200. It's not running out of screen space that's the issue. I like my browser to be tall rather than wide. And my opinion is that a web page shouldn't take up my whole screen anymore than my email program does, or skype. Also, a webpage should still look good when it is resized to its minimum width. Currently at minimum width the ratio of content over sidebars is about 1:1.

The space taken by the left sidebar can be reduced quite a bit by reducing the width of the "Subscribe me!" email textbox.

And I notice now that the minimum width of the message composer is significantly larger than the minimum width of the message display.

That would be cool. I will see if there's a way to show only tagged videos, otherwise I will remove it...

I just feel that the videos are a waste of space and of little relevance to Geekzone. My 2c..

- revenues from subscribers who can browse Geekzone completely ad free: $100/month.

Some food for thought for you :)

I think geekzone could see some significant savings on bandwidth cost while also improving the performance and responsiveness of the site if you applied some modern web tricks and techniques to geekzone.

A few are just simple configuration settings that are not on by default in IIS, eg: gzip compression for static files, expiry headers and etags. Others are fairly informal established best practices like minify/gzip javascript and css files or putting common images into a sprite image and then positioning with css so only 1 http request is used for 10 images instead of 10.. and so on.

A major thing you're probably avoiding doing is getting rid of the table based layout and doing it properly with divs and css. You would probably get a significant html weight reduction there.

Now for the scary part....

Below is the geekzone main/default page's performance rating in the yslow (an addon for the firebug addon in firefox), it's not great...

Here is the number of http requests and the timeline to handle them (remember browsers only process 2 http requests at a time by default), it's not looking too flash either..

Anyway like I said earlier a quick review of http://developer.yahoo.com/performance/rules.html will get you on the right track, a lot of the tricks are very easy to actually implement once you know about them.
