I never thought of call rates, but yes that will really put the cat among the pigeons. Hopefully call rates will drop for both networks rather than increase to cover the undoubtably large cost of doing this.

Hmmmm i'm totally delighted and also incredibly nervous about the outcome of this.

Remember when home 0800 numbers were $4.95?
They now cost tyou $45 due to a "regulator" grrr.

at least all my easy numbers just became that much more valuable!! I wonder who will "own" the numbers now!!!! maybe like domain names they will finally belong to the customer!

Disenchanted: long term, id rather see icons next to someones name in my contact list to indicate what they can and cant recieve.

Just wait... There are things around the corner for this.

Perhaps Vodafone NZ could get some preliminary practice by providing for transfer of VF pre-paid numbers to accounts? Or will this require another $605,048 cost ruling by the TCC?

Slightly OT, but one of the main reasons for not doing this could be the time involved (I may be wrong). It is not as easy to change the number on a sim card. Vodafones process seems excessively time consuming. Im going by my experience when my simcard got destroyed and i got the number transfered onto a new one. Really not worth the hassle

When i got my Telecom prepaid upgraded to a plan the whole thing took under 5minutes and that was mostly signing paper.

I don't think there's anything involved in changing the SIM card when moving from prepaid to postpaid. It is in the routing and billing systems in the backend.

It's quite easy for Vodafone to change numbers to a new SIM card. Depends whom you get but the new simcard needs to be "new" not a pre used.

sometimes it does foul up but this is rare.

Vodafone has 3 HLR's or number holding machines and a more complex billing arrangement with Prepay on 3 and 4 and post pay on the other. (5)
Telecom only has one for CDMA to cross numbers and simply creates an "account" customer which permanently diverts to a voice platform instead of straight out and billing later., something like a prepaid phonecard to complete all the calls and control the barring and rating for SMS and wap etc. though this has changed.... I think Number port will be easy for Telecom and very hard for voda though I have heard they are scrapping the old Bellsouth "snake" system (finally!)
