I accept this feature if GZ makes some sort of money out of it, such as advertising. But I dislike fb and would like to be able to turn the feature off when I browse. Possible or not?

Also, the box gets in the way of the quick reply window in firefox (on a mac). Image (hopefully) included.

That depends on the window size and resolution. What are you using?

currently it is 1280x1024 and I always use firefox fullscreen

but surely this caring excessively about screen resolution and window size is a bit outdated, you should have it scaling fairly nicely to work within reasonable ranges

Interesting. Using Firefox, and moved it to my second monitor at 1280x1024 and it shows just right:

The Facebook Like button doesn't make money for us - directly. It does let users know what other friends (if logged in to Facebook) liked around the site. If you are not logged into Facebook then you get the top recommendations.

I have moved the option to turn off Facebook integration and it's no longer a subscriber-only feature.

I'm on 1280x800 ie standard macbook screen. Have the Dock sitting on the left side of the screen so it's slightly less than that.
Even with firefox maximised it still doesn't fit side by side. However this is no longer an issue for me as I removed the facebook feature (thanks for that!).
