Satch: Good ideas.
What's the deal with the "Trusted" moniker?  How does that get allocated?

Awesome idea.

I think another thing to do is to get users to introduce themselves before posting in the main forums, this way we get to know them and it helps weed out those users that create a profile, demand help, and then bugger off.

Good idea in theory, although you might want to consider the perverse incentives that it creates.
For example:
Bob joined geekzone just to post a rant about telecom customer services. Finds that he cannot post a new topic in the telecom forum until he has 10 posts. Instead of meaningfully engaging with the community over a week or month, he posts silly things like 'bump' across ten random threads to meet the minimum, and then he posts his rant.

Something to think about

The "minimum" only applies to some forums where the possiblity of spam is higher - at the moment only the Offers/Wanted. The Geekzone forum is limited too because people post in the first forum they see, so we wanted to change that.

All other forums are open, so what you say won't happen.
