Yeah I see that, but I am definitely logged into geekzone at the time, and it automaticaly populates my username and email address.
Does that mean I have to login separately to the blogging 'system' even if I am already logged into the geekzone forums?

No, it means only blog owners can bypass the email link requirement. Geekzone users see the rich text editor (and can post links) while non-Geekzone users (or not logged in) only see a text box (and can't post links).

I get the impression that we're using the term 'lame' in different context.

My comment was with respect to comparing the blog system to the forum system. Having used the forums and found them to be quite good, I found the blog system to be far less user friendly (lame - SteveONs choice of words, sorry, perhaps should have chosen a different term?).

This, to me, doesn't mean that I find the blog system lame over all, only that it's less user friendly than the forums system.

In this instance, the forum system has set my user expectation (quite high, as GZ forums are one of the best I've used).

Agreed. I was using Wordpress with no plug ins, fresh out of the box and it got drowned in exactly the comments you talked about.

It sounds to me the bad user experience is on you now, for not allowing comments and having people complaining to you.

Go have a think about it...

I did at the time. My considered view is that in my case, people who really have something to say will email me directly with their comment.

The observation is that you don't get a public right of reply is also relevant (for those who made that observation).

There are any number of outlets that people could use to exercise their own right of reply.

In my case, I put the blog up because I was sick of my comments being removed by moderators on another site because they may not be quite on topic or received objection by people who didn't want to see a point of view that was opposed to theirs.

As for user experience, in some instances, I'd prefer the user didn't have an instant right of reply and was forced to go away and think about the subject mater for a second before just hitting the post button.

If I was attempting to generate revenue from my comments, then I'd have to very much agree with you. I'd want them to be able to rant away quickly and keep them drawn into being on my site and in front of my ads. But my blogs aren't focused at revenue generation.

Based on this conversation there is definitely scope for this to be applied to the forums & blog system. Add to that a voting / moderation system where it can be applied to specific users (maybe a popularity contest?) who continue to offend with the length of time increased with each offence.

Read it, and some interesting ideas. We are currently not seeing much spam (either in forums or blogs). I suspect we have a good mix of automated and manual system going on.

I suggest intense debate or disquss commenting systems. i personally use them on my website. However intergrating it into geekzone may require some work.

ya, it didn't escape me just how ironic that might look as I wrote it... and I agree, you're quite right, I'm as guilty of some of these issues as others some days.

I am far to slap happy on the post button and don't always think.

I think some days things need a considered response, and others its just a bit of a pub discussion.

Personally I view peoples private blogs as more the considered stuff and forums as just a bit of a discussion.

But hey, I don't get it right every day.... pfffttt... who does?
