Got to say that I have also been caught out by that, as that is the usual place a search box goes with web design conventions.

nate: For the record, you can turn that box off to save confusion (which I have cause I was always mucking it up)

woo! turned that box off, never use it anyway. Too "social networking" directed anyway.

freitasm: As I said it was a decision on performance. The Google Search box is a script. Loading it in every page view when it's only used on a minor number of cases is a waste of people's bandwidth and time.

There's a SEARCH link in the menu.

couldnt you just use a plain old text box, without the scripts, with a post action to redirect to the custom search page, sending the search query as param or form field?

In your profile there's an "enable updates" option. Uncheck it.

[joke]

If people can't find the SEARCH link in the top menu, how easy is for them to find an option in their profile to disable the status box, or any other option for that matter?
