Some people come across as abrasive here, simply because of ego or just think they know too much in a particular field and gives them a license to talk down on others.

Would be nice to be able to anonymously -1 people but only have mods or Mauricio to respond on them at a personal level

Personally I've seen a drop in the general tone of GZ'ers posts in the last 12 and especially last 6 months. People are not affording each other the same level of courtesy and respect that once was more common here. People seem more sensitive and less tolerant which is a shame.

Unsure what can be done about that, but I'd certainly like to see a bit more positivity here. I have started a few threads on feel good topics, but they go pretty unposted in sadly :)

Unsure what would this achieve?

freitasm: Had a thought about its implementation. Instead of NOT LISTING the reply at all I am thinking of listing inside a box with something like "CONTENT FILTERED - Click to see"... I need to test t he script/CSS to make this work and if this works ok it should be easy to implement. Probably will test this during upcoming weekend...

I'm happy with that, ideally it would just say "herp derp herp derp herp derp" There are people on here who aren't trolling, but they have such simplistic ideas about things (particularly social issues) they really annoy me every time I see their avatar(s).
My dream would for them to be completely invisible, including any of their quoted text. Something like a personal shadowban. I don't really want a -1 option, that would involve me seeing their opinions first.

The report function pretty much has this functionality already

I agree with the OP. Would it be possible to make a -1 that wasn't in your face, but say just deducted 1 from the users total, you don't see who did it and it isn't recorded, just your +1's will reflect your true value to the other forum participants.

I think having a -1 will make the problem worse.

While I enjoy some of the "Off Topic" discussions I suspect this is where the majority of any "troll" posts arise.

Nearly every other thread is about either asking for help or information or providing that information and +1 is a very good way to show who provides good help and information. It's hard for a Troll to gain any traction.

The "Off Topic" posts are mostly opinion and we all know Opinions are like A*** holes, ........... everyone has one. sealed Just because someone has a differing opinion to you it doesn't make them wrong.

I fear with having a -1 we will end up with a popularity contest and not with a system that values someone that gives good helpful information.

There is already bullying and hate speech happening here.  Just search for phrases like "subhuman" and "all civil servants are lazy".  The fix isn't a kill file or a -1 button, but more consistent moderation.  Good moderation comes from the meta cognitive ability to recognise your own confirmation bias.

Perhaps tho' if there needs to be a mechanical fix for the problem what is needed is a mute function, if you want to engage in hate speech you get hit with a 3 day silence period that increases the more times a mod has to mute you.

We have thousands of posts every day. The community has to help too - using the REPORT POST feature.

When things are reported moderators quickly remove and warn - or ban - users.

I didn't realise the report function would be anonymous? I personally do not use it because of comeback - easier to just ignore the posts or go for a walk

Your reports are sent to moderators only. There is no reason for someone being reported to know who is reporting.

The mods should be able to see who reported the post and why, but you should be fine using the feature if a post makes you uncomfortable. From what I've seen here, the mods are really good at toning threads down by removing offending posts, or outright banning nuisances very quickly. As online communities go this one is in extremely good shape.

Having been using various Internet fora since before '91 I wouldn't use the word "extremely".  Yes it's much better than vendor fora which are cesspits of hate, but community/hobby fora are a different beast.  It can just take a few key people to leave to change the tone completely.

This place is pretty darned civil. The Trademe messageboards are a lot worse. And look at all the trolls who post on YouTube.

I do tend to agree. It's hard to find a middle ground between being the thought police and getting rid of pests. My personal pet hate is the more recent trend of belittling people for having a differing opinion to your own. I hate this but often end up not replying to posts as I just don't think it's worth the aggravation.
