The auto login seems to reset randomly; i.e. I connect to geekzone, browse bits of it, don't close the browser, but a few minutes later, my login time has reset. Therefore, I now can't go and click on the "new forum posts", as they are now current to about a minute a go :(

Auto-login is just that: automatic login. It doesn't change the fact that the server will end the session within 20 minutes if no activity is detected.

That's why I asked if people wanted to have buttons in the "New Forum Posts" page for "Last login", "Twelve hours", "One day" and "One Week". People said it wasn't needed - But I always think ahead, and that's why I asked, right?

weird as i am no longer experiencing this, once I am logged in and ticked on the box it stayed logged in, I am at work and hadn't been on geekzone since last night from home. So it is OK as is at the moment.

Understand the 20min thing, but this often happens within a few minutes. I'm all for the since "x hours" option, but since I wasn't the person who requested the "new forum posts", I couldn't comment on it at the time (coz I hadn't used it). Now that I have used it, it's a good feature, and your suggestions would add some additional benefit.

Well that's weird because my Geekzone User ID stays Logged In for days on end unless I tell it to Logout. Exactly the same as it used to before the recent "security" issue.

How does the 20 minute inactivity timeout come into play? I have never experienced it.

But that's what "auto login" is all about. It will automatic log your user id in if the session doesn't exist. If you check the box you have the impression you never log out because it will never ask for your credentials.

Clear the cookies and manually log in. If there's no activity iIn 20 minutes the session is closed.

What I am saying is that even with automatic loging sessions are closed - you just don't realise it. But the script records the login and of course the "New" icon and the "Most recent posts" page will be affected.

The 20 minutes timeout has been there since day one. Nothing changed since the "security" issue. I removed the automatic login option and forced the cookies to be cleared, while I was testing changes in the system, to prevent people posting scripts and other possible exploits. Once this was done I just restored the auto login functionality as it was before.

Hmmm, the "Most Recent Posts" page (I am guessing you actually mean the New Forum Posts page) for me just grows longer and longer until such time as I click Reset Read Flags which is exactly what it's supposed to do.

From what you are saying, I should be seeing the New Forum Posts page reset itself to no entries every 20 minutes, which would be really annoying, as I probably wouldn't have read all the posts by then.

However, that is not what I seeing, as explained above (thankfully!).

Have I still got the wrong end of the stick here???

All I can say is that the New Forum Posts is working perfectly for me, and allows me to catch up on a whole 20+ hours of new posts without missing a single one, unless I want to. It's perfect, couldn't be better IMO

Perhaps your browser is sending something to the server and keeping the connection alive? I am not sure. If you open a page now, wait 19 minutes and refresh or move to another page it won't timeout and end the session. But perhaps if you are using Internet Explorer it could be loading the RSS feeds in the background and keeping the session open? Who knows...

But I agree, the page helps and yes I am thinking of adding a few buttons to search back in time even if you have reset the flags...

I shall try explain the issue a little better:

e.g.
- haven't been on geekzone for say 12hrs
- check my emails, there are some updated forum posts I am watching
- click on these links and read the new posts (I'm now auto-logged in)
- now I go to the "new forum posts"
- my last login is now a few minutes ago, sometime during the above reading of posts, not the 12 hours ago

It seems to be a bit random as to when it happens, or what time it picks for my last login.

The other factor here could be my web browser, currently running IE8 beta 2. So this may be the issue, especially since there does not seem to be anyone else experiencing this.

That actually sounds like correct behaviour to me coffeebaron..

- You haven't been to GZ for 12 hours - so your session (read: login) has expired
- You click through this morning to read a topic - the auto-login creates a new session and logs you in at that time.

The "New" icon is based on your previous session login time which is associated which is stored in the session collection...

Not quite, because if that happened normally, then the "new forum posts" would not work at all. The time tag for "since last visit" should be the 12 hours ago, not when I first log in for the day, and it is still within 20minutes of browsing GZ.

Yes, this something is Internet Explorer 8. Do you have our RSS feeds in it? It appears your browser is logging on Geekzone at a rate of thousands of times per minute.

The solution? I've blocked your account, so it won't log into Geekzone and load the server (not load really, the server is still working fine), but you have to remove the RSS feed from IE8. I recommend you use FeedDemon.

Thanks for your email Mauricio. Removed the feeds, but atleast the "new forum posts" should work now. Hope I didn't nearly crash Geekzone with my 36000 logins
