It would give me a great reason to start my HTPC project and would give me a great relief from the inadequate dual core Celeron which is slaving away in my laptop!

Would be nice to be able to go LGA 1156 for an upgrade, a birthday treat realistically as I was born in April :)

I am working on an electronic automated home system, centered around my Media Centre which needs an upgrade based around this processor! Ideas for this system include:

Web-cam security cameras (via ZoneMinder)

MediaPortal for the media running MovingPictures and MyTV-Series

A 'Caller-ID' doorbell system using a fingerprint-pad as the doorbell button, meaning I can assign fingerprints to names and photos and see who is at the door from an LCD panel in my lounge

Much more as it comes to mind

With the Intel Core i5 processor I would finally have the power I needed to run Flight Simulator X with all the sliders set to maximum. The Intel Core i5 would give me something I have never had before – dynamic trees!

With a CPU like this, i can max out all those games that i purchased thinking i could run it on an athlon X2 3HZ, but that doesn't even cut it. 18 frames per second isnt really playable haha, an i5 would bring gorgeous performance!! and I wouldn't have to worry about CPU bottlenecks for a lonnnngg time :)

I have a ray tracer assignment for my paper this semester, I would use the new processor to write less efficient code as I wouldn't have to wait so long for it to execute.

I have been so patient tolerating my 2.2ghz AMD x2 for FOUR years. i am also thrifty and living on a fine financial wire. the best way forward would be a free intel core i5 project and the AMD would become a donation to someone who is in real need.

I would put a little leash on mine and take it for little walks (well, drags really) up and down the street. The neighbours would think I was weird, but once I showed them how cute it is, I'm sure they'd understand.

I've built up a collection of 30 or 40 8mm and HDV home video cassettes over the last 20 years. I have copied them to my hard drive now I would like to edit them and author them to blu-ray - I've been waiting for a suitably powered cpu before attempting this - I believe a system built around i5 would be perfect.

At the moment, I am struggling to put together a replacement PC from some second hand $20 parts.
But a single core CPU and a basic AGP card just doesn't cut the mustard these days. How can i run a VM and keep up my computer expertise with such an underpowered machine?

Oh the delemma...

My aging Dell Dual XEON 1.5GHz 1Gig RAMBUS with an AGP ATI Radeon 3450 is just screaming to be replaced... But which way to go...

Video editing workhorse (more cores/threads) or is it time to build something that can play games (couple of cores and more GHz) that are less than 4 years old?

Oh look! The Core i5 has two cores, hyperthreading, 2.66GHz and 8Meg cache... hmmmm... dual personality machine?

Squeeze it on modern mobo with SATA3, USB3, firewire, slots for lots of multichannel RAM, good audio, gig ethernet, drop in an ATI Radeon 5570 and you've got the bones of machine capable of serious video crunching and editing and still quite capable of gaming with the big boys... Should run Win7 fairly sweet...

Probably fair quieter and use way less power than this dusty dinosaur!

Well the WHS box at home is needing an upgrade so this CPU would be a great start.
BUT the server at work also needs and upgrade as it is about 7-8 years old and is on it's last legs.
Guess which one I'll be doing if I win a CPU? :)

As I have recently put together a grunty new computer I can't use the same excuse as the others of "old computer that needs to be replaced", as everybody else where seems to be using as the general theme.

So here would be my top two reasons:

1) To quote from Pokemon: "Gotta catch 'em all!" (this current computer is an AMD, I now need an Intel to complete the set)
2) Then I'll use it to create SkyNet, where I'll use it to hijack the internet and paste the word "Intel" across every users' screen!

I am currently without a space heater for the study. Since we are coming into winter and my laptop just doesn't kick out the heat that my old dead desktop did, I find myself dreading the cold of the Wellington winter.

Please let me win the CPU so I can heat my house!
