Please note if this is abused I will remove the 200 allowance.

This means HALF ARSED ANSWERS ARE NOT ANSWERS.

I was just thinking about the trusted frame work as well.

I note that vendors often get a trusted flag by default, which I read as say that GZ has made some effort to authenticate that the user does actually represent that vendor (which I think is a cool thing btw).

I wonder if there should be a 'trusted good answerer' type flag as well, which is different to a vendor flag trusted flag?  It could be generated by counting the number of 'answered' flags that others set on a user.

The question that always comes to my TFHWH is bias.  Johnr, for example, in my view is someone who you should just about always trust an answer from in my observation.  No matter if his answer is in a competitors thread I find him very balanced in his comments.  Other posters not as much.

Not that I think this trust thing is actually so much of a real problem currently at present, or at all, but from the POV of a new user in 'say the telecom forum', if you saw a post from VF's JR, would you be inclined to question bias more?  Should we trust DanFromHybid(TiVO Guy) in the Tbox thread?  Though, with all due respect, should we trust Gary from Telstra in the Tbox thread?

/random thoughts on cool new features :)

We can't "always trust an answer" because there are situations when the answer is not that clear - I saw one example today where JohnR asked about something and suggested using a different router and then other people started saying they too were seeing the same problem. It turns out it was something wrong on VF.

Trusting the answer by default in that case would be wrong, because the first reply was not the answer.

Answers have to be manually set by someone and has to be correct.

I thought about giving badges to people with certain number of answers, but decided not to because that would lead to people setting their own replies as answers - in some cases probably even if they weren't.

Trust but not too much.

ISP employees are trusted by default because we authenticated them via email and because they will be asking for account information around the forum, so Trust is implicit.

On that note, I just had a look at this thread in the 'answer  mode' and it's a very cool feature alright.  By the time you get to 4 pages of discussion on a topic it gets to be a long read just to find answers from discussion.

I wonder if the 'half arsed answers' that build up in the discussion actually do contribute to a full answer?

I very much take your point re only providing dumb comments "ya the blue wire" rather than a properly developed response, but I also see value in a list of answers "ya the blue wire", "and don't forget the green", "watch you don't hit the white', "hit the white it goes bang", which does happen with geek discussion some times.

/more random thought on cool features :)

What I meant is if someone replies "Hello" and someone else set it as "Answer" I will be very cross.

Ya, I wondered if the 200 post limit was a bit low if you're not trusted.  I'd have thought 2000 would be more sensible, though I agree with the idea to just give it a go and see if it does actually get abused.

200 is a good starting point, and Mauricio can always vary it (either way) if it doesn't appear right.
You've got to start somewhere.

Great idea...... And as always mods have their fingers on the buttons if tweaking is required

Just noticed a grammar error on the view answer filtered page:

This is a filtered page: currently showing reply marked as answer. Click here to see full discussion.

perhaps that should be "replies marked as answers" ?

Yes, that was written when we allowed one Set Answer per topic only. Fixed.

I'd quite like to see the option to opt out/in of having the Set Answer button. I find the red quite distracting.

Yes, will talk to Phil about changing the colour on those buttons.

I won't doing an opt -out though. The idea of Set Answers is so that the community can make it easier for others to find answers to problems already solved.

Sometimes you have a ten page discussion but only one reply is the real answer. We have to get everyone doing their part to set answers when they see a post the contain the correct response.

Generally liking the new feature and can see the benefits, especially for historic threads which is how a lot of people first visit geekzone from a google search.

One query - currently you can mark your own posts as an answer, is that intended?

There is no reason why you shouldn't be able to mark your own post as an answer - if you start doing it for every answer and they are wrong someone is going to point it out and the user get banned double quick.
