I have adblock installed but its turned off most of the time unless the site is auto playing videos and going overboard displaying loads of other flashing rubbish.  There are becoming more and more sites out there hiding content from adblock users and you don't even know that its being hidden.  When I research different things through Google, I like to know that iv'e got the best chance of finding what i'm looking for, and this is not possible if some sites are possibly hiding content.

Quite a clever idea and I guess you cannot blame site owners for doing this.

I have AdBlock Plus running at work and at home.
Unfortunately I need to keep the ads blocked at work, but I have whitelisted the site at home.

Its easy to detect ad blockers, I run a business providing free wifi out of cafe's etc... and its supported by advertising.  I insert a php script called ads.php on the splash page with a query string like ?advert=123456, this its inserted into an html img tag.  When called will set a session variable, if the session variable is not found, the user simply doesn't see any free wifi options and a payment option shows instead asking them to select a number of mb/gb.

It's even easier to hide from these sorts of things.

I found this to be an interesting read this morning. What are others' thoughts on the attention economy?

_Very_ interesting. And interestingly, the webpass service Geekzone is trialing is goes directly to the author's point "Most websites don’t give you the option to pay them directly."

But even the ones who do are not seeing any uptake in subscriptions anyway.

The majority of people just won't pay, regardless of how low it goes - because one here, one there and gets costly. Webpass.io is a good service though - one subscription, many publishers sharing the pie. Let's see if they can pull it off.

I've not read this whole thread, just the first page and a half.
Short attention span.
I dont mind the ads, and I've even clicked on a few and found the advertised product or service to be beneficial to me.
I've also thought from time to time I should pay the sub as I now use this site quite a lot.
But I'd quite like to keep the ads.
Can you pay the sub and keep the ads?

Delete cookies?! Are you insane?!

Yes, you can pay the sub and turn ads on/off from profile page.

Just checking, but I don't think there's an option to keep ads on using webpass, just the direct subscription?

Correct. Direct subscription allows you to turn ads on/off as well as forum pages sidebar.

If webpass works well we can then expand to add this option.

I have no ad-blocker.

Just plain chrome on win 7.

I get the nasty red banner.

I also get the adverts.

If I am going to get the nag-banner, perhaps I should just install an ad-blocker as well.

You probably had an ad blocker at some stage. We use a cookie to test it, so you could clear up cookies and see if this goes away.
