Rikkitic:

How about a way to prevent abuse of personal mail to get around bans from specific forums? A number of us are having issues with a particular user.

This is off topic but who the hell does this? Are they that pathetic and desperate? Sad? Incapable of understanding that they are banned from places for a reason?

Identification is something, I feel very uncomfortable with.

You know who I claim to be from the previous years of paid subscription and my lifetime subs payment.

I just see no personal benefit for me and a potential loss of private information giving any identifiable information to a third party.

I don't have a Facebook account, I don't give my passport details to be save routinely on my koru membership.

I understand there are potential benefits to the forum but to be very honest, if giving such information was the cost of being a member, I wouldn't have joined and certainly wouldn't have financially contributed to the forum. I would have remained a lurker gaining from posts but contributing nothing.

This comment is meant as caring criticism as this is my primary source of tech goodness.

I kind of feel the same, especially with all the privacy breaches that seem to occur on a regular basis. I am happy to provide any identity information required to the proper New Zealand authorities, even though that will probably also end up on the dark web, but I am not comfortable having that handed around to third-party organisations. I know that happens anyway, like when I make a credit card purchase, but I just don't like the idea. I also never tick the box to remember my credit card number. I want to maintain as much control as possible over my data. I also don't belong to Twitter, Facebook, or any social media site other than Geekzone.

I should add I wouldn't mind giving my ID info directly to @freitasm. I trust him from my years on Geekzone and I feel I know him. I can't say the same for a third-party organisation I have never had dealings with. Every time I read 'we take your privacy very seriously', my hackles go up.

All good points - and making it clear: it's not mandatory - it's not the price of membership. I will just make sure people have a much higher threshold to go through before getting to some parts of the site - you may not know but we had a couple of cases in the last months of people selling stuff, getting paid but not delivering.

The Offers/Wanted is a place where a lot of the community action happens - but if it is to continue we have to make sure it's safe for everyone.

As for the subscriptions, while I see the PayPal transactions I don't actually see your details - except for name and email but I know some people use their partner's account to pay for that so I can't be always sure - and PayPal is a payment so I couldn't ever ask people to pay a subscription to be verified - the ID verification I am about to offer is a free service (for you).

I have just had a video call with their COO and was told of a couple of clients in Australia. I was also sent their security and compliance certificates.

In our scenario they would be a data processor only, while the company behind Geekzone would be a data controller (yes, a lot of people have a relationship with Geekzone and see me as the site's face but we do have a company established to run the site).

This exactly reflects my feelings.

I'm generally keen to do anything I can to make this community more safe and enjoyable, but I've become very conservative with my online privacy recently due to the number of high profile data breaches and increasingly sophisticated scams going around.

Tasks:

- Integrate verification code and platform (scripts, database)
- Add the ID-verified tag to forum posts and public profile pages
- Release to beta testers so they can get ID-verified and show up in discussions with the appropriate tag (and badge!)
- Modify forums so that some will be open only to ID-verified users or users with a much higher post count than today's limits. These will be Offers/Wanted, Startups and Politics.
- Introduce the manual/automated required ID verification for edge cases

Side note - I assume you'll update the Privacy Statement too ;)

According to their Privacy Shield certification, how they use the personal information provided by users being verified is detailed in their contract with their customers - so essentially Geekzone is told what they'd do with our data which would probably go in GZ's privacy statement.

I get I'm new here so don't have much say but maybe +1 count could also be considered here?
It's probably a better indication of trust than a users post count.

I have the view that +1 is not the same as trust.

Any use of the service would come with a change in our Privacy Policy and would only affect whomever decided to go through the verification.

If someone has been a Geekzone member for more than 10 years, a paid subscriber, and has posted thousands of times and received thousands of +1's, would that person experience any practical difference between being verified or not? Would there be any reason for such a user to bother becoming verified?

Practically, not. The ID verification would be a shortcut to the number of posts requirements, basically.

Process was pretty smooth, I never got the SMS for the photo verify but the webcam one worked well.

Let me know if you want to test this - I have to switch you to the Beta group membership to access the ID verification page.
