joker97: Personally, I think our mods are doing a great job, compared to other forums. We don't want a nanny forum do we?

I want a forum where you don't need to see on the front page a bunch of self righteous white dues circle jerking themselves over how the country is full of dark skin dole bludgers who should feed their own kids - on the front page of a technology forum.

Having an opinion is great, but if the forum thread is created just to spiel of some condescending diatribe about how the world would be better if everyone was a middle aged IT person on 70K with too much time on their hands, it gets old quick.

Not attacking mods, Just need to be able to silence users who aren't so keen to talk about tech on a tech forum.

jeffnz: don't like the -1 at all and for all the reasons already given. How bad is the problem or is it a problem and are we only compounding it by trying ti fix what may only be a few negative comments.

The off topic thread has grown and a lot just frequent that and or not much else so is that one of the may problem areas if so maybe a time out function available to moderators.

You could always make it so that not everyone has the -1 option. If it was restricted to (say) users who had been registered for at least six months, had made at least 50 posts, and had a net score of at least +100 (ie their +1s minus their -1s) that would quickly weed out the trolls from using it.

1eStar:  Yeah but on facebook you can unfollow/hide posts from a user and they have no idea, they still see your posts.

That's irrelevant.

It's completely relevant to the implementation I suggested. It's all about reducing noise. I have hundreds of people I know that want to friend me on Facebook, I can't be bothered reading what they had for breakfast, neither do I want to offend them by blocking them, I simply unfollow/hide prolific posters to manage MY life.

Case and Point: if in fact I'd been able to ignore you as a user, then I wouldn't be wasting my time responding right now, you would be feeling great because you think the whole world agrees with your opinion, so I get 10 more minutes in my life to do something useful, you get a boost. Win-win.

You would be reading me because Handle9 quoted everything I said.  You'd have to kill file him and everyone and anyone else quoting me to have the equivalent of what Facebook does.

That's irrelevant.  If it's a killfile and you killfile me, you'll still see everyone who replies to me and quotes me, i.e. you'll read my post anyway.  A good Usenet newsreader would go a step further and add some kind of regex engine and allow you to hide posts that have too much content from someone you've killed.  That's ok when it's on a client, but if M. were to try and implement something similar there's going to be a lot of CPU cycles sucked up for reasons like Demeter thought I was rude one morning when we'd both had far too much coffee to drink on an empty stomach.

At least Demeter had tasty coconut and butter in hers ;)

Well that's Aucklanders for you, can't even make an Affogato :-)

That's very high school; the extroverts get to be prefects and the introverts get treated like they're dysfunctional.

I don't want to down play the racist\classcist element (see my post earlier about hate speech) , but to be fair there are plenty of technology circle jerks as well.

Woaaaah. If that was true I wouldn't be running the site anymore. If there's a topic where some self righteous white dude is doing that, there are tens, hundreds more where there are people genuinely seeking answers and helping others.

If you have this impression - and it is not how I see it at all - then I recommend you retire your account. Send me a PM and I can do this for you.

You have regulars who have made over 9000 posts state in threads that others in NZ have less right to life than them.  I don't know about you put I find that pretty offensive.  I'd like to think Geekzone was part of a better world http://goo.gl/OoxhQL

It's their opinion. One of the rules in the FUG is that we try not to censor opinions - unless it is clearly hate speech. But trolling is a different thing. It's acting in a way to create tension or bully. People can report the trolling and we do take action. People can report hate speech and we do take action.

What we don't have here is a nest of vipers as some are trying to make it look like.

Yeah so the problem I have is I get censored for asking someone if they think they're behaving crazy yet advocating killing all the useless people is ok.  If that's the kind of opinion you think is ok I don't want to be a member here.  Delete my account.

If someone is advocating killing useless people show me the post in the person banned.

You people are talking about this but no one is reporting. We can't possibly read all posts every day as there are thousands coming in.

If you don't report we can't weed out.

I have read through some of the threads where people have expressed somewhat backwards, insensitive, old fashioned and poor taste views and\or appear to try and start arguments about somewhat silly of things, but I don't think I've seen anything quite like what some of you are portraying. Thankfully even said threads are quite rare too.  I can think of one or two examples where people have made flippant remarks for example about cutting down a tree with a protester in it as the world would be better off with one less "greenie", but I tend to approach these sort of posts as a poor attempt at humour more than anything else...

Overall I think these forums are in extremely good shape and the mods are doing an outstanding job. I still don't think anything more than the already present "report post" button is needed.

No. We definitely don't want a nanny (hate that term tho) forum.

I think the mods do a good job. The balance between control and freedom is about right.

I really don't know what the fuss is about.

Please keep the forums as they are.

None of the threads we're talking about are one sided. Why not just +1 posts you do agree with?

The way I see it, hopefully geekzone is a proportional representation of the real world, that way we will see diversity of input and discover a great cross section of views. Who knows, the poster you want to ban may be the best person to answer my thread query?

Obviously, abusive posters should be dealt with, and I think the moderators here do a good job. I can't opt out of membership of society, so I'm happy to accept community blogs as an extension of society, warts and all.
