joker97: Personally, I think our mods are doing a great job, compared to other forums. We don't want a nanny forum do we?

I want a forum where you don't need to see on the front page a bunch of self righteous white dues circle jerking themselves over how the country is full of dark skin dole bludgers who should feed their own kids - on the front page of a technology forum.

Having an opinion is great, but if the forum thread is created just to spiel of some condescending diatribe about how the world would be better if everyone was a middle aged IT person on 70K with too much time on their hands, it gets old quick.

Not attacking mods, Just need to be able to silence users who aren't so keen to talk about tech on a tech forum.

your post seems a bit ironic given you are complaining about people's opinions and being able to express them.

Glassboy: Yeah so the problem I have is I get censored for asking someone if they think they're behaving crazy yet advocating killing all the useless people is ok.  If that's the kind of opinion you think is ok I don't want to be a member here.  Delete my account.

I'm a bit skeptical at this point. I have hung out here for a number of years and have never really seen that type of behaviour at all. While things can occasionally get a bit "warm" in discussions, particularly in the Off Topic section, this would have to be one of the most generally friendly, civil, polite, and on topic discussion groups I have ever participated in. There is very little that could legitimately be classed as vaguely hate speech or abuse, and the mods do a great job (thanks MF!) of jumping on that.

If you have genuinely seen posts advocating mass murder (I haven't) then I hope you have reported them so that they can be dealt with.

Other than that, if you rally hate the tone of the discussions here so much, I'm curious why you keep coming back?

I think people are generalising and trying to mob rule against those who have different opinions.

As I said before, providing it is not a criminal act or hate speech we won't Censor people for opinions.

I think this is quite a civilised forum compared to the anarchy you see in some other online presences. We deal with breaches swiftly and fairly.

How's the ignore button project going? The serial defecator is still littering the message boards, infuriating the faithful forum contributors, carefully never breaching any fug, unhelpfully offering opinions on every topic without being constructive in any meaningful way.
After 5 years of enjoying my technology fix on Geekzone I'm getting sick of the drivel I have to skim read through day after day. Some people might think it's wonderful to have the discussion stimulated, but I am getting closer to being over and out from here.

I think it's allready been generally agreed that almost all the "inflamatory" posts are in the "off topic" forum; this is certainly what I find. While this is probably the forum I contribute to the most, it's also the one that can indeed start to really %#$% with my brain when I've reached my fill of responses that repulse me for their inherent misogyny or (more commonly) simply poorly-argued, missing-the-point, over-the-top characterisations of the topic at hand.

My solution when I reach this point? I just stay away from the "off topic" threads for a while. I can't get irritated or bite back if I don't know what's being discussed and said.

Can I suggest you try the same approach? Surely a  lot easier than putting in place an unncessary filtering system and/or negative rating option - all it requires is a little self-control!

Given you already say you're here for your "technology fix", I'd imagine you'll still be able to continue to enjoy this on GZ without being exposed to those types of posts that seem to irritate you.

Then again, if it's every single post by particular members that irritiate you and that these are spread throughout even the tech-oriented forums, and you just simply can't cope by ignoring these posts, perhaps that says more about your tolerance levels?

+1 This has worked very well for me and I've found that doing that means I'm less likely to be a cow to people. Except in my case, it's staying away from the Vodafone forum. :P

I initially thought the idea of a -1 button was a good idea but after reading peoples' opinions that it might become a tool to group-bully people I kind of have to agree. I'll be one of the first to admit that on occasion when looking through the comments on Stuff articles I'll downvote someone who already has a huge number of negative votes (whether I disagree with the comment or not) just to see how many downvotes that person can get, so I think there is the potential for that to happen where something gets voted down just to see what we can all get that number to.

Look, if you don't like the direction a specific discussion is taking you can respond with valid arguments, or if you think the other side is just trolling, report it.

You can also just walk away from that specific thread.

What we can't and won't do is ban someone for stating their opinion, unless it's breaking the rules.

Sometimes I wonder how well a country would do if some people took power. Everyone they disagree with ends up in jail, or dead? It doesn't work that way folks.

I think the problem is there are a number of threads where if an argument the goes against the prevailing theme it results in receiving a whomping even if it is valid.

Eg. a thread like "Yay! Government has announced dog food will be witheld from bad owners who don't wash their dogs"
If you were to wade in and suggest that all this does is create hungry unwashed dogs, you'd get slayed.

I mainly stay away from non technical areas now.

There are plenty of examples in fairly recent history of that occurring in different countries, not only under fascist governments.
