Hey Everyone,

I have moved house several weeks ago and since then have been noticing a slight speed decrease of about 1/3 of what it was previously. I am experiencing a number of issues with web pages not loading and videos buffering slowly, even low quality.

I rang vodafone tech support and did the usual restart router, isolation tests etc, and the tech support did there line test things and told me that 5-7mbps is "normal" speed for my area.

Funny thing is I was getting about 16mbps about 2km further north of hamilton.

I am wondering if there is anything else I could do or if someone could provide a little further explanation into why this speed is "normal" .

Heres the relevant Line Stats:

SpeedTest: 5.85Mbps down     0.79Mbps up

                                    Upstream            Downstream

NoiseMargin(dB)             12.8                   12.1

Attenuation(dB)              38.5                   17.5

Power(dBm)                   12.4                   18.4

I will post cabinet information when the chorus webpage decides to load..
EDIT: May be due to an DNS issue. Will try to get more information tomorrow sorry.

Cheers for any help

Your speed is going to vary completely on your distance from the cabinet or exchange and the current state of your house wiring. How is your wiring and have you performed a basic isolation test?

Have you checked over the house wiring in the new house?

Check out this thread on the VFNZ forum, Customer got the house wiring checked over by coffeebaron

Get the wiring at your new house checked. Read the topic I created a few months back and when you get to the last pages you will see people getting speeds going up two or three times. Then click the "email" button to send CoffeeBaron a PM.

Thanks for the replies. Internet seems to be actually loading webpages today.

We are inside the Hamilton HN/Exchange ADSL2+ area.

I have done an isolation test with the router plugged directly into the wall jack with no filter.

I have not checked the internal wiring nor know how to. What does this involve? We live at a rented apartment.

What about what the vodafone tech support said, that this speed is "normal"? Looking at the map we are inside the main exchange area about 2km away. We live near waikato stadium.

I just find it odd that vodafone sees 6mbps as normal for the centre of Hamilton.

Many people would give there first born child for 6Mbps DL

Did you read and understand the INFO we linked off to?

Does not matter if you live near Waikato stadium, What is the condition of the wiring for your apartment building?

I had speeds that went up and down (different provider) like crazy and ended up getting a new cable run straight from the demarc point to my router. My downstream rate has gone from sub 1000Kbps (on avg) to over 19500Kbps...

@genfres as others have mentioned, the first port of call is getting your wiring checked and a master splitter installed. I have done many of these the past couple of months for Geekzone users with great success. I travel through Hamilton often so can certainly do an install for you.
Send me a PM / email with some contact details if you would like more info.

Cheers

Hi folks,

It is possible we might be missing the point here. While yes 6Mbit is a fine speed and yes it is lower than what he previously had, it is not a speed where a customer would then have trouble browsing websites which the OP has referred to a couple of times.

Sending him off to improve/fix his house wiring only to find he is on a Conklin with a limited backhaul or there is some sort of software on the CPE chewing up the bandwidth and creating packet loss would be of limited help.

Genfres if your problem is just why would your throughput change when moving locations ignore my post as the others have covered this well. If you start experiencing issues where you have trouble loading websites you might want to give the VF call centre a call again. If you do it would be good if you took the approach of explaining that you seem to be having trouble loading websites quickly instead of focusing on the speed of the connection.

Which means it is not specifically a Conklin issue. I was not trying to say that the OP being connected to a Conklin specifically IS the issue just that if he is complaining about his 6Mbit speed because he is having trouble browsing websites then the actual sync rate is probably not the root problem as a 256Kbit sync will browse websites fine.

Once again thanks for the replies.
I will contact vodafone support again regarding the problem loading webpages. It seems this may be a seperate issue not related to the line speed, and I would like this topic to focus on the slow Internet Speed.

It is my personal opinion that being in the Hamilton CBD that I should expect a greater speed than 6mbps. Because I was basically told that this speed is normal my vodafone tech and that theres nothing more I can do was surprising.

I am aware that internal wiring may be a issue. I have read posts regarding this prior to posting this thread and have read the linked posts regarding wiring issues. Thanks for providing these. I firstly wanted to see if it could be any other issue as I'm not sure what is involved with checking the internal wiring and the costs involved.

As I am in a rented apartment I'm not sure if I would need to get permission from the landlord or if it is something that they would consider to be repaired. It will be appreciated if something could explain the process of checking internal wiring to see if I need to contact the Landlord. In any case I will give coffeebaron an email.

I am aware that other factors influence broadband speed etc. I have posted this thread as I do believe there is a problem with the connection, internal wiring or not. Unless someone can explain to me that 6mbps is standard internet speed for Hamilton CBD.

I think I have covered all the points. Thanks once again for all the help guys.

I think the OP is right, 6Mbps is not really acceptable with attenuation of 37, that is about what I have
and I have a line speed of 16Mbps down and 2Mbps up.
If it was me I would try a new modem first, one with a Trend chipset in it, they sync very fast, but even if that gets your broadband going faster, I would still get Coffeebarron to install a proper splitter it can make a huge difference both to speed and stability.

Johnr: Automatic DNS settings through the Vodafone Router. Router says DNS server is 203.109.129.67.
The problem with webpages occurs at random, about 2/5 webpages fail to load first time. Typically refresh fixes, sometimes doesn't.

Techmeister: At the old address I was getting similar speeds to yourself. I suspect it is the internally wiring, I am now wondering how likely I can get the landlord to cover the wiring expenses.
