Comparing You Choose with SupaPrepay.

YouChoose 20

Team contract 12/24/36 months
$20 for 20 minutes = $1 per min (have to pay this even if you don't sue the minutes)
$10 for 1000 V-V txt messages

Supa PrePay

Credit expires after 90 days
89c per minute (no minimum calling required)
$10 for 2000 V-V txt messages
Offpeak capped calling at $2 for 2 hours
Bestmate addon - $6 for unlimited calls/txt/video calls to one bestmate

Why would anyone in their right mind sign up to a You Choose plan? Is this why Vodafone heavily promoted You Choose and locked customers into contracts just before they released SupaPrepay?

Opinions please.... thanks.

No, I think the lock into contracts by both sides is because of the iminent launch of portability in a few months time. Especially telecom with their insane prices to break a 24 month flexi plan.

I think that they had to introduce bestmate and the text addons onto prepay when they did to stop the mass exodus of teenagers with the end of the free texting promotion

You Choose allows a greater flexibility than the high price calls on prepay and the limited two options.

When you-choose has "bestmate" and the plan revamp, it will be fantastic and a big drawcard, I do have to agree there needs to be some consistency among prepay and on-account, it's really gotten stupid in NZ. Really stupid, I can think of 10 prepay plans and a plethora of account options...... as Theresa Gattung's says goes,... "it's used confusion and complexity as the cheif marketing tool"

Actually. you can quite well do a "Before Supa Prepay" and "After" comparison too...

Before <> After

#1: $0.49/min to VF and Landlines and Aus <> $0.89 to VF an Landlines and Telecom and International (Before wins)

#2: Free text weekends <> $10 for 2000texts (Small win for "after")

#3: $2 Take 10 anytime <> $2 for 2hrs off peak to VF (Before wins)

#4: ............ <> Bestmate $6 (After wins)

Conclusion? Really, in the end, "before" and "after" Supa Prepay? Not that phenomenal a deal IMO, really.... It's more expensive to call now (#1).... The only thing now that I really like? Bestmate...

Super prepay follows a common model, Expensive "everyday" (calls + TXT+pxt) and cheap "offers" to bait users. If you can use (abuse) the offers then it's all good! shame there aint phones with two sims both running at once!

Expensive everyday calls ect on SupaPrePay? But wait a minute.... on You Choose calling is more expensive? And you have access to less offers... $2 for 2 hours ect...

Prices to 027 mobiles go down. Big win for prepaid users. as previously one was forced to consider either a plan or a 027 handset for calls to it. Doesn't affect You Choose unless you purchase the 200 VF to VF Nights and weekends package.

Prices for selected countries go down from $1.39 pm to $0.89 - Very good particularly if you call some countries. However as far as I know You Choose international pricing is still higher for the most countries (including the ones that have discounted rates in Supa Prepaid).

"Free text weekends" were annoying and eventually resulted in some purchasing a cheap VF handset solely for the purpose of free texts. Having a quota of texts through the week is a good idea. Personally don't use >300 text and I also text 025/027 a little bit so the You Choose text 200 suits me better.

Take 10 and $2 for 2 hours are about the same - they both put the On Account offerings to shame. On Account initially got Let yourself go, however Vodafone pulled it 'because of customer demand for it on prepaid'. However $2 for 2 hours isn't bad at all, though now I'm using Telecoms 3 minute hour which is offered to prepaid/onebill customers.

Bestmate - great idea, poor implementation. If they had offered it to all VFNZ customers (perhaps excluding business) then perhaps some On Account customers wouldn't feel like they have been triple/quad(with double topups) shafted.

Personally I think 89c per minute is too high for calling anywhere and would go out of my way to use it as little as possible.

Totally agree.... I can call a landline "calling card access number", and only pay an extra $0.05/min! To many countries, USA, UK, China, Japan, etc...

Personally, whether you like "Supa Prepay", I think depends on 3 things really....

#1: A big texting user
#2: Got a gf or bf that you think day and night about.... Or, a very good friend...

And nah... How is the price of $0.89/min a "big win for prepaid users calling to telecom"??? You can always use the "Prepaid Anytime Plan", last time I checked, that was still valid... And that has always been at a rate of $0.89 anyway.....

One thing I never get.... WHY do promotions never focus on brining mobile calling prices down??? It's always about "fringe benefits".. never ever about calling!

Because thats where all the money really is, its not in texting. So to cut call prices means cutting their big profits. People will still use it regardless, mobile phones have become that much of a necessity...

Good point however mobiles do still have advantages. They are portable for one.To use Skype out, you need:
An internet connection with reasonable latency and upload.
Depending on which internet connection - a landline.
A computer.
Decent headset.
A credit card or paypal account.
Patience.
Tolerance if the sound quality is poor.

While using a mobile, you need:
A mobile.
Credit on mobile (you don't need a credit card)

For short calls, I probably wouldn't bother using Skype however for longer calls I'd look at VOIP services (calling cards or Telecoms 0161 service). Remember that even on VOIP services (Skype and calling cards) calling mobiles in NZ are still reasonably high.

Personally a flat rate even if its a bit higher than motormouth appeals much more to me because I make a few 021->027 calls. However again this point is muted as I'm on You Choose. What this boils down to is how much time and effect you're willing to invest in making calls. Potentially you can make calls for free (PC to PC) however it boils down to whether you want to be locked to your computer or invest more time and enegy.

there was a promotion where some of the people who registered to be "the first to know" on www.bestmate.co.nz got the first month of txt2000 for free
