Hi all

Any advice would be appreciated. I am having huge issues getting Telstra to connect our new house so we can have cable (naked broadband 60G). They will only offer us a adsl connection with a phone line for over $100. Every person I have spoken to has been either unhelpful or incredibly rude.

There are Telstra Cable lines running along the power lines in front of our house. Other houses on our street have Telstra Cable. All that is required is for the line to run from the pole to our house. On the phone they keep saying there is no cable in our area or that it is switched off. I know this isn't true as other on our street are using it.
Most recently I spoke to a incredibly rude person who was encouraging us not to get a property check done to check for eligibility saying that they never get approved. He said that the technician will get there and decline it immediately so I shouldn't get it. Anyone can simply access Google street view and see the cable there on the pole right in front of our house.

Is there any recommendations on how to deal with Telstra in order to get the cable installed promptly?

I can only wish that some other ISP would offer cable broadband for a similar price.

Are you a rear property? Would the cable drop encroach on another property? Both are the pretty common reasons.

Without knowing your actual address it's probably hard for anybody to really give a balanced view on why they've chosen to connect you to DSL and not cable.  TCL won't connect DSL customers within their HFC coverage footprint.

It certainly relieves my rage from dealing with them over the phone. I noticed Telstra monitor this forum so perhaps someone who is in the know at Telstra can help me out. I expect the property inspection will get me the cable connection I want as once you see it it is obvious we can be connected.
It is a pain though as that takes 10 working days and we move in Friday next week. So even once they have made the inspection it will likely take even longer to get it hooked up.

We are the front property. The cable will go over a shared driveway but would be above the phone lines that are currently running across there.

That's potentially the reason.

We hold the title for the driveway so it shouldn't be an issue. I suspect in the past the house at the back of the section applied and the previous owners of the house we purchased prevented the rear house from getting cable. So in their system it shows up as both houses cannot get it.

Thanks for replying Gary. As we needed the internet on the 21st when we move in (and also due to poor customer service over the phone from Telstra (The staff at your store were very helpful)) I have just got off the phone with Telecom. The offered me a 12 month contract with 120gb, free wifi router, first 2 months free for $105 per month. So over 12 months that works out at $87.50 per month for 120GB.

Unfortunately I only got your reply while I was on the phone and had already agreed to all the Terms.
Looks like I miss out on Cable for 12 months :(

Interesting, I used to live in a back flat when I lived in Wellington and I had cable with no problem. They did a cable drop and ran it right under my neighbour's house in front. It then came up right out the side next to my property and was connected with 0 problems.

The problem is the sales people are sitting looking at a computer screen that says they cannot do it. If they hadn't been so rude and if I didn't need internet in a hurry then I could of waited for the house inspection and would probably of got it no trouble. The house next door has Telstra Cable so I doubt it would of been an issue. Our house is all of 4 metres from the pole with nothing in between so installing it would have been really simple.

I was only after the LightSpeed 60G Up to 15 Mbps / 2 Mbps 60G $75.95 (Cable Plan) as it is the cheapest internet only plan but they refused to give it to me. I was going to have to wait for a property inspection before they would agree to install it and I cannot wait that long.

I don't even use the land line so we probably wont even buy a phone to plug in at our new house.
The next cheapest option was $95 a month with Vodafone for adsl and no phone but I managed to do a deal with telecom for $87.5 per month for 120GB and a phone(which we wont use).

It is a real shame we couldn't get cable sorted within the next 3 weeks. In 10 months time I will book a property inspection again so we can go onto cable straight away when we come off our telecom contract in 12 months time.
