in today's weekend herald there is a huge article about vodafone. the of head vodafone live said vodafone are going to have television packages by next year.yes finally i will be able to watch television on the go like they do in japan,usa,uk. they didn't mention what channels but it said news,sports,cartoons.so hopefully that will mean they will have tv1,tv2,tv3,c4,cnn streaming live.

Will it be flat fee as in U.S. offerings, or will they charge data for this? It's all good to say "We'll have", but is it affordable?

What we need is something like http://www.mobitv.com/ licenced in New Zealand.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Some of the existing Mobile TV services really appeal to me, but they're simply far to expensive to bother with. Still, Vodafone's recent price drop on their online music offering suggests that they are beginning to realise that these multimedia services need to be affordable to the average user in order for their use to become mainstream.

Which story was that? I read the W/E Herald, but apart from big advertising supplements from Vodafone and Nokia, all I could find was this story:

Has anyone actually tried watching any of the current stuff on Vodafone Live, like say Sky News? It streams okay provided your coverage is really good, but very quickly eats your battery and causes the handset to become quite hot to hold - not to mention watching TV on a tiny screen hurts your eyes.

I'm not quite sure why people want to watch TV on tiny screens, let alone pay probably $7/channel or something a week knowing Vodafone - it'd be nicer if they could put money towards expanding 3G coverage and getting rid of the dead spots first.

Yeah, I had a Sharp 3G phone to review a while ago, and tried watching the news on it while sitting in traffic jams (yes, I'm kidding). It wasn't that bad an experience, but like you say, it ate into the battery life something horrible and you really needed good reception because otherwise all the buffering soon became old.
