So, TC has finally revised it's mobile phone deal after nearly 48 months, and they finally have a way for you to get a smart phone and pay it off, and it works out cheaper to pay the $9 over a 24month term than buy it outright from thier store.  but here is the catch, it only runs android 1.6 but is upgradable to 2.1, really, is this a good deal?  i dont know, the LG p500 runs 2.2 the motrola defy runs 2.3, the samsung sII 2.3, so i dont know, is 2.1 that bad, is it worth it, or should i buy a smartphone with the later version of the android OS?

LG P500 runs 2.3
SII runs 4.0.4

Apart from that, yes 2.1 is bad!

Not worth it at all, the leap to 2.2/2.3 is huge, 4.0 even bigger

As Kobiak says, it's like buying an atom PC with XP on it

1.6 is Win 95
2.1 is Win XP
2.2/2.3 are Vista
4.0 is Windows 7

If you are talking about the X8, just leave it.  It's a terrible phone.

You can get the X10 Mini for $199 from Dick Smith, and that has an ICS 4.0 upgrade available! including a much nicer camera

Depends what you expect from your phone. In terms of functionality the Xperia X8 running on Éclair is enough for your basic smartphone functions (email, browsing, facebook. navigation) and on par price wise for phones with similar hardware specs like the X10 mini and Vodafone 858. Apart from a few speed improvements the only major advantage to 2.2 Froyo over 2.1 Éclair is USB tethering. If you can live without that and you’re not worried about using your phone as a status symbol then the X8 might be a viable option. You could also root your phone and use one of several widely available ROMs to upgrade to 2.3 Gingerbread. But in my experience it would be a waste of time on a phone with 3” screen.
