Just noticed the Vodafone new Smart Data plans...

Smart Data $70 -> Smart Data $80
Smart Data $90 -> Smart Data $100
Smart Data $120 (unchanged)
Smart Data $150 -> Smart Data $140
Smart Data $190 > Smart Data $170

All new Smart Data plans anytime mins increased by 100mins except the Smart Data $170 which has 1000mins.

All new Smart Data plans has 2500 any network TXTs - unchanged.

All new Smart Data plans have no indication of bonus NZBestMate(s) included.

All new Smart Data plans are on 24 months term contract.

Unsure about the phone subsidy has changed compare to the previous Smart Data plans.

Internet is my backyard...

No no - not as bad as Telecom. I've been with VF for years and am now going to switch to TC because their iPhone5 plan is about the same as I currently have with VF. With my 32GB iP4 I pay just over $40 for 265MB data and more mins and txt than I need. It's a plan that suits me. With their new plan I get double and triple what I need and I have to pay $80.

Why can't I keep my same plan?

So TC have a $39 plan that suits my personal needs - makes sense to switch.

I don't get Telco's these days, they don't seem to talk to their customers. Recently, after being with Orcon since they started I switched to Slingshot since they messed things up with their Genius rollout. Switching to SS meant I paid less and got more (and faster). The same thing is going to happen again when I go to TC mobile. Do I care - not a bit. Does my wallet care - oh yes!

I couldn't disagree more.

These new Vodafone offerings are vastly inferior to what Telecom are offering.

Basically Vodafone have made it very clearly they're not nterested in your business unless you want a 24 month contact. Telecom have taken exactly the opposite approach offering the best value on account plans currently in the marketplace if you don't want a term contract. With Telecom you're getting around twice the value the old plans offered.

I should have clarified. For an iPhone 5, both companies are offering horrible plans with compulsory 24 month contracts and low phone subsidies.

Telecom's Open Smartphone plans are much more competitive, but you need to acquire an iPhone elsewhere to use them.

If you add in the extra cost for bestmates on the VF plans, all they have really done is decrease the phone discount.

Bestmate was the only thing that set Vodafone apart in the market and now they have taken that away and are charging extra for it. Not impressed.

I'd call that choice.

Either fork out full price for the phone or get a subsidy on your handset. I don't think a ~$800 subsidy which equates to $35 per month on a 24 month plan is "horrible". The subsidies available on iPhone contracts from both Vodafone and Telecom are much higher than you'll get for other handsets.

That's my point. Vodafone are no longer interested in you unless you want a 24 month plan. If you don't want a subsidised handset Telecom is now a better option by far with vastly better pricing.

Do Vodafone offer pay monthly plans if you bring your own handset without the 24 month contract for bringing your own handset over??

That was a real off putter for me a few years ago with my N95 I got over seas but I still had to go on the same terms as if I had got a discounted handset.

correction, unless you want to buy an iphone from Telecom.

you can buy your iphone from somewhere else (like the apple store) and use it on any Telecom plan you like

Yes, you can, kind of. Those Smart (not SmartData) plans (http://www.vodafone.co.nz/phones-plans/plans/smart/) have a minimum term of one month only. If you want more data, you can buy a 1GB pack for $20.

Having said that, I cannot understand the logic of those SmartData plans. Say I have my own smartphone and want to join VF, and I don't need the $400+ phone subsidy, why lock me for 24 months? 24 months is a long long time.
