Hi there

We have a machine that is connected via a Vodem.
We need to remote desktop to this machine with a static IP account when we are not near it, but we are having trouble setting up the VPN, as the port is not obviously accessible on the Vodem.
Does anyone have a solution?

Are you using the correct APN? You can get public IP's on certain APNs. I'm not sure about how static they are. I recall you may have to pay extra for them? (Static public IPs)

I think the 'internet' APN will give you a public IP. Use that with dyndns or similar to give yourself a static hostname.

using this free service to create a static IP from the Dynamic IP that the Vodem generates
dnsdynamic.org

Vodafone systems engineer just told someone that the port is not accessible

There must be a workaround?
We are using a VPN to login but cannot access a port.

If you get a public IP, it should be accessible? Though i'm not sure what ports vodafone filter. I wouldn't think they'd filter VPN ports.

Just to clarify.
We have successfully mapped a static hostname to the dynamically changing Vodem IP in Ubuntu via DDClient.
We just have trouble accessing the port the Vodem is on.
Can it be done?

Is there any kind of firewall in place? What are the first two octets of the IP you get on the vodem? (What's the IP show up in Ubuntu as that interface for? can you paste the output of "iptables -L -n -v"?

Yep. So no firewall on the ubuntu box.. what about the IP address? Is it getting a public IP or a RFC1918 one?

Well, that looks like a public v4 address assigned to VF. Can you ask vodafone specifically what ports they're blocking?

Maybe johnr can help here?

What APN are you using? Some are firewalled and block all inbound uninitiated traffic, some aren't.

The very top stickied thread in this forum will help you.

You also can't get a static IP unless you're using a corporate APN.

The million dollar answer to that is quite simple - imagine the costs in having a DDOS attack on your phone.
