Just received a (silent) call on our VFX line with caller ID 09301774414 - most of that looks like an Auckland CBD number, except it's two digits too long. Anyone know what might have happened there?

yes we know exactly, this CLI was received from the PSTN and passed to you as it was received. It didn't come from the usual suspects of bad ANI presentation but from the PSTN this time.

They have tried a few numbers by the looks of it.

Wow fast response! Thanks. Interesting they've been ringing around - probably fraudulent then. The line silence was interesting - I'm wondering if it was technical problems, or deliberate. The call ended after ~8 seconds.

On the side, I want VDSL, but this level of service and community interaction (as well as a helpdesk staffed with intelligent people) is why I prefer to stay with Xnet and wait for it, rather than impatiently move to another ISP, because your service levels are awesome.

Definitely a scam. I had one of these too. If you goole the number it also says it is a scam number.

Yay got the modem, now waiting on Chorus to fix a fault on the second line pair before I get to use it.

Back on topic, those weird calls keep on coming - just got one from 04 357608256 - again, two seconds of silence before the call terminates. Anyone have any idea what purpose these calls is serving? Odd that there's nobody (not even a scammer) audible on the other end of the line, and that the call just terminates after answering.

I believe the silence is when the autodialler is trying to put you through to a scammer but the call centre is too busy to answer, hence the silence and eventual termination

I've *still* never got to talk to one of these scammers. Was hoping to play them with describing an unbootable PC ("NTLDR is missing" or somesuch, perhaps a funny burning smell), thanking them for coming to my rescue, and insisting they stay on the line until it's fixed.
