Hi there,

I'm thinking about moving off Slingshot and getting Vodafone cable 100mbps.
I live in Karori, Wellington. Can anyone give me some speed tests for that area? Are there any issues with streaming video?

When I sign up is there an install cost? Is the cable modem provided for me?

On cable it will be quite close to 100Mbps

Any issues with streaming video from where? streaming also depends on the pipe at the far side

Lots of INFO on the main Vodafone NZ site and yes cable modem is provided

As I said I'm with Slingshot at the moment. Will Vodafone arrange cancellation of those services. I want to keep the same phone number so how should I go about making the switch.

On the Vodafone NZ site you can sign up and arrange a port of the landline number

You'll be responsible for making sure your services from your LSP is cancelled, but Vodafone will port your landline service over - best to double check once you've changed that you're off the Slingshot billing platform :)

On top of the previous answer: DO NOT CANCEL YOUR ACCOUNT WITH SLINGSHOT UNTIL PORT IS DONE AND WORKING.

Number porting can only be done on active numbers. If you cancel the account with Slingshot then you lose the number.

Arrange for a new account with Vodafone, request the porting and they will do everything.

Once the phone is working with the new provider you can contact the old provider to make sure the account was actually closed and it's all done.

Install costs and term commitments should be confirmed by the person taking your order - check and confirm before you agree (as with any ISP service contract)

Be aware the Cable Modem will present to you the customer as a 100mbps Ethernet connection, to plug into the Ethernet port on your computer or your own Router.

Most ISP's supply cheapie DSL modems meant for connection to a DSL circuit - very rare they have an Ethernet WAN connection as well for plugging into Cable (or UFB).

Another note: if you buy a cheap router you get a cheap connection. Even some middle of range routers can't switch packets fast enough. I had a Cisco SRP 521W and get max of 85 Mbps. Switched to a router from another company (sorry, still in tests, can't tell you the model) and my connection went up to 100 Mbps.

So a few bucks you spend in a router may give you fast or slow - you decide.

Be aware the Cable Modem will present to you the customer as a 100mbps Ethernet connection, to plug into the Ethernet port on your computer or your own Router.

Most ISP's supply cheapie DSL modems meant for connection to a DSL circuit - very rare they have an Ethernet WAN connection as well for plugging into Cable (or UFB).

Actually, the DOCSIS 3.0 modem has a Gigabit Ethernet port, over which your 100Mbps flows. It's a good idea to have a GE port to connect it to, on your PC (most recent ones will) or your home gateway (yeah, that might be a problem). In short, make sure all the components in the chain are up to the job.

Also, please note, the cable modem is a bridge, not a router. If you need a residential gateway, you'll need to provide one yourself (although the Warpspeed plan currently bundles a WiFi router if you sign up for 12 mo).

Not the Vodafone Station as it does not support the HFC network

Not the Vodafone Station as it does not support the HFC network

Even though it supports UFB, which is also presented as ethernet to the customer?

If you do get a Netcomm make sure the firewall is on and the DNS is not responding to requests from WAN side - those things seem to be plagued with this and being used in DDoS attacks lately.

Also ensure you update the software on this unit. Earlier firmware versions had throughput issues.

Will we have any issues keeping my number if the name on the Slingshot account differs from the Vodafone annount holder?
Will a call to Slingshot beforehand to let them know suffice?
