Hi all (particularly Phil),

What's the process to get my current Telecom number ported over to VFX? Can I do this online or do I have to call?

I rang them yesterday and they just asked me to send an email to service@wxc.co.nz with a request to port my landline number across to VFX... That sounded like that was all that is required.

Here is the info provided by Phil when I got my Telecom number ported to VFX:

To Comply with the Terms, we need…

Confirmation of “eligibility” for Porting

- Access requirements met: e.g. 2nd line, alternate access, no open service orders… etc

- Customer is informed and understands impacts of Porting their number(s)

- Customer Authorisation / Voice Verification or written

For Porting Admin, we need…

- Current Service Provider

- Account Number

- Account Name

- Existing Service Address

- Port Date / Time (Port Activations can only occur from Mon – Fri between 9am & 4pm)

- Contact Name

- Contact Number

VFX Info - Is this going to replace your current VFX number or a New Line ? etc

Some of these things may have changed slightly in the 4 weeks since my number was ported.

And Yes, you will need to call so the team can go through the Voice Verification process with you (the call is recorded -- after you give your permission -- to act as the agreement between you and WxC).

Thanks guys, I'll give them a call at 10. I'm also curious - anyone know if it's possible to port a CustomerLink number to VFX?

You can port any Telecom landline number to another provider so long as you stay in the same local calling area. It doesn't matter whether it's a Customer Link number or a physical landline number.

However, it must be a number which is assigned to a Telecom account in your name or which you otherwise have authority over e.g. a business account where you are authorised to make changes to the services provided.

Once porting is completed, you can kiss goodbye to the $20 per month Customer Link charge

How many numbers can you have on on vfx connection? Whats the charge for additional numbers?

Im thinking if its cheap enough I will call telecom now and order a customer link number in order to port it.

As many as you like. There are 2 ports on most of the common ATA devices such as PAP2T, SPA2102/3102 etc. You need to have one port per VFX number.

richms: Whats the charge for additional numbers?

The first number is $11.25 per month including GST.

The second number is $7.95 per month including GST and I guess that price also applies for subsequent numbers, but you would need to confirm this with WxC.

Not to mention the 5c per minute incoming call charge. This is going to be fantastic, I can choose a decent number on any exchange in the same LICA, then port it to VFX (which I'll hopefully be able to use natively with Asterisk soon!)

Now, time to work on making my monitored alarm talk to Asterisk and sending me an SMS to my newly-ported 027 vodafone when the alarm goes off. God I love number portability.

Cool, just managed to find myself a decent YXX XXXX number (eg: 911 1111), and chucked it on my account as a customer link number. Port to VFX here I come! :)

Getting a wee bit OT here but there are some cheap GSM modules around these days with relay inputs and ouyputs. Hook one of these up to your alarm on prepay.. It's a lot simpler.

How did you do that? just calling telecom or is there a site you can test them at?

Call em up and ask them to check if the number is allocatable. Bear in mind that they have to search by exchange, so it helps them even more if you know the exchange you want to search. Have a look at this spreadsheet for available prefixes and their exchange:

Then, simply call 123 and request a CustomerLink number, and ask them to let you choose your own. If the number(s) you want aren't allocatable, they should be able to find you a fairly decent number on the same exchange in the list of recently deactivated numbers.

Either put it on an existing account, or create a new account, they'll charge you one month in advance (around $24), as well as any partial-month fees. Then just port the number over with your new (or old) account number.

EDIT: Also, to check if a number isnt in use (well, kind of), just ring the number and see if it rings :P Obviously, this doesn't help if it's an inactive DDI, recently allocated number, or if the number has already been allocated 10 times (after this it goes to some sort of 'number graveyard' where it can never be allocated again, I believe.)
