Hey guys.
Kind of new to this whole forum thingy.
Couple of things if noticed lately.
Utorrent downloads are not connecting up and download speeds have decreased, these are fully seeded torrents and never usually have a problem. Has this happened to anyone else lately or has anyone got any suggestions.
For E.G. Lost episodes never had a problem but this week on fully seeded downloads not connecting at all.
And secondly how does port forwarding work? i had a squiz at the website that Utorrent sends me to and still cant figure out what port i need to use. I have the standard black Motorola sb5101 (TCL current modem offering) and standard Wireless Belkin modem BELKIN 54g from noel leeming for $99.00, My computer cables into the belking router.
I know its huge but any help would be appreciated.

port forwarding is when your router forwards a request that comes in on a particular port to another specific port/ip address within your LAN.. (portforward.com has guides on how to do it for

this site is good: http://portforward.com/english/applications/port_forwarding/Utorrent/Utorrentindex.htm

click the link, then choose your brand of router then it will give you details on how to correctly open the ports on that router for utorrent.. for other applications go here first http://portforward.com/cports.htm to choose the application.

I'm on TCL and can max out my 4Mb plan (like 450KBps). When you click the test to see if it is port forwarding properly and it says no, you will need to copy that port number. With that number add it to your virtual servers on your router setup page (http://192.168.2.1/ probably). Make sure in utorrent you untick the option to randomize the port number when you open utorrent otherwise you will have to keep changing it in the virtual servers.

192.168.2.2

10237-10237

It should look something like that with "10237" being the port number and "1.2.168.2.2" being your local ip on the utorrent PC.

go to www.portforward.com.

choose port forwarding.

choose your brand of router.

choose the program you want to forward the port for (utorrent)

it comes up with detailed instructions on how to get it working for your router. you need the port number written down, and as said before you need to tell utorrent not to randomise the port each time it starts. you may also want to turn off UPnP as it can override some manual port forwarding settings.

OK, I'm on a mac now, so I'm not using utorrent, but there are a LOT of routers which do not play nicely with bittorrent - too many open ports.

Look on the utorrent site's FAQ for more info. I know the linksys WRT54G is a classic example of this.... whole thing just locks up :( It is fixable - usually turn down the max number of connections available to under 100 (default is 250 I think)

As for incoming ports - it works better WITH the port open, but for me, I can get 1meg or so, and sometimes up to 2.5, (ie, 100K/s or 250K/s) without ANY ports open (doing it at work, so no access to the router.....). Open it if you can - but if you can't, dont worry ;-)

As for TCL - when I had it (before I moved houses), I could max my 4meg out without ports open, just had to have more than one running at a time.

It's not port forwarding that is the issue. The problem is the outgoing connections (usually >200) which bittorrent uses by default. the WRT54G (and some others) keeps NAT mappings open for 5 days, I think, so the table fills up, and it crashes....

I ended up going with a windows 2003 server box with 2 NIC's. Worked pefectly for, what, 4 years?

I nearly sprayed my coffee when I read this, Linksys routers hold NAT mapping for 5 days? Thats longer than a DHCP lease. I'm consistantly amazed by the buggy firmware they release, holding open the NAT translation for a few minutes or hours is OK with no traffic, but 5 days?

Do you have any more information?

Have a look on the FAQ at utorrent.com - and also the azures ones, which I think they refer to. Some (dlink) don't like >100 open connections (utorrent defaults to 200). I had it with my v5.0 WRT54G. Died every 12-14 hours. Gettting the WRT54GL fixes it, IF you run DD-WRT (google it :) ). That converts it from a toy into something about the quality of a low end cisco device :)
