Hello,

I have a wireless network happily running in the UK and thought my Mum might benefit from a similar system running here in NZ (they have a few laptops in the house).  She is connected currently to TelstraClear using their standard modem.

A friend had a spare wireless modem router - a Belkin F5D7630-4A router http://www.thinkbroadband.com/hardware/reviews/2004/q4/belkin-f5d7630-4a.html which I have brought to NZ with me.  I tried it while in the UK on my connection and it was simple to configure and connected immediately (TalkTalk Broadband).

I figured with my Mums username and password, it would be a simple connection.  I connected with an ethernet cable and changed the details - leaving the connection type as PPPoA and just changing the login details - no connection...

The wireless LAN side is working fine and the laptops can logon to the wireless network, but they cannot access the internet as the 'connected' prompt is not being given in the modems HTML based config screen.

Any ideas why this would not be connecting?  Is there anything 'different' between the ADSL connection in the UK and that TelstraClear provides that I would need to change a setting for?

I don't want to waste too much time chasing this problem, I'm only visting for a few weeks and don't want to spend hours behind the computer!!  Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Danny

Hi,

That's an ADSL modem router so probably won't work - see the thread here.

I'm assuming that your Mum is on TCL cable, of course.  TCL cable doesn't use ADSL at all - so what you need is a plain router that has a WAN port.  You then connect the TCL cable modem to the router's WAN port with an ethernet cable, set up the router with the IP address, gateway, etc.  Have a browse through previous threads.

Cheers,
Jonathan

Hi again,

Thanks for the reply.

I don't know much about cable, but my Mum is on TelstraClear's PDQ Launch 1G Package - which I thought was an ADSL connection isn't it?

If it is, do you know what the config settings are I should be using PPPoA, PPPoE etc...

If it is cable internet, do you know if I could use that Router as an access point and just bypass the modem - since I have it here with me!

Thanks,
Danny

If it connects to the phone socket then it is ADSL. PDQ is ADSL.

PPPoA, VCI=100, VPI=0

Form of username is "username@dsl.clear.net.nz".

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Yes, disregard my post - if it's TelstraClear PDQ, then your router should work.  Afraid I can't help much.
