Hi gus,

I am in New Zealand and new to Geekzone and WorldxChange and got a questions/problem. I noticed that I can't access several major websites anymore since I am getting my broadband through WorldxChange. One example would be www.weather.com

I can't access the site anymore – it just times out. I also have a website which pulls weather data from weather.com. When looking at my own site the weather data is not showing. I checked with friends overseas and have confirmation that weather.com is not down and for them looking at my website the weather data is showing just fine.

Just wonder if certain IP addresses with WorldxChange might be blocked by some major sites for some reason like spamming. Does anyone here know anything about this or has experienced anything simular?

Just a short update on this. I just tried to go to weather.com through a proxy website (hiding my IP address) and it works just fine. This I think confirms my suspicion that the allocated IP address has been blocked.

I have 2 different ISPs (ICONZ and Xnet) and can access www.weather.com from both of them without any problem.

It must be the specific IP address you were allocated by Xnet that has been blocked, however, clearly not all of Xnet's IP addresses have been blocked or I wouldn't be able to access the Weather site either.

Maybe the IP address you have been allocated used to belong to a spammer before. I would suggest asking Xnet for a different IP address.

Xnet is allocating a dynamic IP address. I restarted my router several times which results in a different IP address. Unfortunately only the C block of the IP address is changing and still no access to weather.com and several other major sites which shows me that a whole C block range or even A or B block has been blocked.
My allocated A block is 58 and B block is 28
The only way around this woud be an unblocked dedicated IP address. Is Xnet offering dedicated IP addresses?

What other sites are you having problems with? Can you do a trace to weather.com and show where it stops (they block ICMP from the looks of it but I just want to see what point it stops at).

I've not seen any other complaints and all our IP space is in 58.28.x.x, I can get to it fine from 58.28.24.x and 58.28.96.x and Grant looks like he can get to it on our static range. There's also a lot of dynamic ranges so it seems odd that it looks blocked on all of them and the odds are against you for picking up the same IP twice. Our website also pulls the weather from weather.com and that's still working so if you can give us some more info then maybe we can work out what the problem is.

Another blocked site would be www.spamhaus.org I wanted to check if my IP address is listed there on the blocked list. My current IP address after restarting my router is 58.28.140.183

I've put you on a static for a trial so you need to stop going through the proxy as that's the only address we can see your connection talking to.

Also, where are those traces from as they're not from your Xnet connection, we need you to do traces from your machine on your network.

If you're still not getting there without a proxy I don't think any of the IP's are banned from any of the sites as you're now on the range that's already been confirmed as working fine in this thread. I'd be looking at things like MTU (msn.com is one that doesn't work too well if your MTU is something odd, as well as seek.co.nz if you want to try it out), firewall settings, making sure that your computer doesn't have some type of malware/spyware.

Hi Wendy,
I just connected another router just to make sure and everything is back to normal. So with other words it's deffinately not a blocked IP address as I thought

I am very sorry about that!
Anyway, still would be interesting to know what exactly is causing this problem in a router. I disabled the firewall and still could not connect to some major sites.

Could it be your DNS settings?
Have you tried using different DNS servers?

DNS was set to automatic assigned on the old router and also on the new router. Important thing is that it's all working again but I am still curious what caused the problem on the old router.
BTW, what is the recommended MTU setting for xnet?

We would usually recommend that you set your router to pick up MTU by default, 1500 would be the optimum but most routers will default to 1492 which will work fine. Anything lower and you can start having issues.

My router has options to filter cookies, Java, ActiveX, and proxy. Possible one of those options blocked access to the sites in question.
